i have reported before that i was having issues shifting at high rpms unless i waited a second to shift it got slightly better after replacing the torque strut mounts. well apparently the top motor mount can be bad but not be cracked they can have to much clearance from the rubber to the metal casing. can anyone elaborate on this? i started putting two and two together when i noticed my car was shaking the rear view mirror at idle at first i thought nothing of it but now im wondering about the mount. also the original is solid rubber brick the aftermarket is the (frowny face mount) any one have any info on why they are different?

I don't think the OE mount is a brick, you got the car with a junky "Anchor" mount probably.

apparently the saturnfans guys think the brick was oem and the frowny anchor mount is aftermarket. its a little confusing but apparently thats it. all the aftermarket ones are frowny mounts

No, the Duralast one from Autozone is now of the brick style. I bought one from there about a year ago.

Also, some clearance between the rubber and metal is OK. I replaced my genuine Saturn mount with the Duralast mount because the OE one had 1/3 or 1/2" of gap between the rubber and the metal after 30k. After mount replacement, I noticed that there was no improvement whatsoever in the amount of NVH.

richpin does a video stating if you can stick a ball point pin between the rubber and metal its bad and that fits in there this is my finger which also fits

LIke I said, if had been the correct mount, as long as the rubber is not cracked, a ringer-finger sized gap may still be OK from my experience.

But it sounds like you have the cruddy style mount anyway, so you may as well go and buy the correct mount

Also be sure to follow the correct procedure of "neutralizing" the mount when you are finished with the top mount - it does make a difference. You have to loosen and retighten the two bolts that are sort of connected to the passenger side dog bone...I believe the bolts are 15mm.

well since it has about an inch of free space i am going to replace it. it has 203,000 miles on it so i think i got my use out of it. i dont mind replacing stuff and id rather due it before it gets real bad

the junky mount is the frowny face mount the brick mount is the one that lasts, the frowny mount is smoother and reduces vibrations but doesn't last both my saturns have the factory brick style mount

Mounts are a trade off. For wheel hop, shifting, throttle control, etc.,a stiffer mount is best.
For idling smoothness, a softer mount is usually best.
Most Mon n Pop street cars have mounts too soft.

Does one really have a choice for motor mounts these days?

So the car drives better but at idle is rough. Vibrates and. Rattles stuff. Engine is not moving though. Everything looks good. Is it because the mount is tighter. Rubber was much stiffer.
