Most sheer stable multi-vis?

i have tested both of these.

the RP20w50 went 90 miles and had a susvis of 79.4
the VR1 20w50 (one of my top picks) went 120 miles and had a susvis of 86.6
same bike, same rider.
now VR1 sae50 is a monster at a susvis of 90.8 at 90 miles.
and exxon superflo 20w50 the price leader with a susvis of 81.7 at 74 miles.
those that think SRT 5w40 is good.... susvis of 68.6 in just 70 miles where SRT 15w40 72.3 in 73 miles for the *new cj-4* and 75.8 for 45 miles on the old ci-4+
again exxon superflo sae40 at 73.2 in 72 miles. buck a quart.
and for those of you that really really really would like to faint: supertech 15w40 cj-4 did all of the Trainrobbers enduro..74 miles with a susvis of 75.0 and a flashpoint of 410!

nothing but nothing touches the straight weights for shear stability.
the ONLY synthetics and semisynth i have had hold up has been maxima, motul and the greengoblin gue.
all the big names...mobil 1, amsoil, royal purple, valvoline, top oil, belray.....fear the MixMaster of Doom.

Good info sunru! Plus you`re in S. Tx like me,so we share the same operating temps. One thing I did notice when I tried VR1 for the first time is that wot runs and shifts near redline were smooth and silent. Different cars can be "picky" about what lubricants you use in them and VR1 seems to be the best oil out of all the ones I`ve tried,plus it`s right under $3 a quart.

Yep, especially if you are talking about SM-rated 5w20's.

The difference between the two numbers in the oil grade designation is not very accuate for determining relative sheer stability as those numbers are just categories (could have been A, B, C, etc, like CwF instead of 10w40, the C standing for winter properties and the F standing for a range of 100C viscosities).

Instead what one needs is to compare actual viscosity vs viscosity of the base oil it is blended from. But also the type/quality of viscosity index improvers used would be helpful.

Someone on this site came up with a neat way at looking at sheer stability, not sure how valid it is, but it makes sense. They compared HTHS with 100C viscosity. I believe they divided 100C vis with HTHS vis and the smaller number was more sheer stable, which means HTHS is a higher proportion of total viscosity. Yeah, I know one is measured at 150C and the other at 100C, but that shouldn't matter.

That someone was Teedub as far as I know, if it was someone else who posted the formula first, apologies. I have taken the liberty to repeat the formula in threads several times.

100C cSt/HTHS = X

You want Min X.

I agree that it makes sense.

Note how in the case of comparing oils with like values of HTHS, the oil with the lower vis would be considered 'better' or more shear stable. So this formula is saying find me the thinnest oil with the best HTHS.

Sounds like Redline 5W20 to me.

Pennzoil advertises with enthusiasm something called Adaptive Molecules. "Unique Adaptive Molecules divide or cluster together under extreme engine stresses of heat, shear and pressure to help reduce oil breakdown and the resulting deposits." Do you think they are using advertising language to speak of the shear characteristics? In used oil analysis PP does shear noticeably. Before I get shot at, I am speaking of 100C cSt going down as mileage goes up.
 
I think Pennzoil is using that advertising language to sell oil....that's all. I use their products, but, hate the cheesy sales-talk.

The PP I used, and got used oil analysis on, showed viscosity held up fine for more than double the manufacturer's recommended OCI.
 
Johnny has posted that the "adaptive molecules" is a marketing term for a type of VII they are using.

used oil analysis here have shown good vis retention for PP.

FrankN4 - I suspect it is advertising blurb for the operating behaviour of certain molecular structures - leading to shear behaviour

Castrol did the same with Unique Modular Attraction (UMA) to describe the actions of some well known additives in their formulation. Advertising "UMA" sold oil - lots of it!

Contrary to what on some people on here would like to believe the major differences in lubricants are now at the "fringes". Many Group 3 products perform at least as well as their "up market" cousins - and at a greatly reduced price! It is now at a point where new Chemicals (covered in Groups 4,5,6) that separate the men from the boys. Largely this is reflected in the end user price of the major Oil Companies products

It is only the major Oil Companies (via their Chemical affiliates) that can spend the R&D monies on "refining" advanced products that work for all of us. The Boutique blenders tag on to this as second string but very important middle point users

Remember that the esterification of lubricants and the use of many complex raw materials and chemicals in lubrication media had its foundation in the 1930s and before. When the price is right some of these will reappear in their lastest forms. But only the "per barrel" price of oil or its scarcity will determine this!
