When you watch youtube videos that show you how to unlock padlocks without knowing the combination, this may make sense. Obviously this won't stop bolt cutters or a battery powered grinder.

$250 for a thermostat when a Honeywell programmable one can be had for $30.
I never thought I'd say this. When we go away for a vacation or something, I put timers in the wall outlets to control the lights, making it look like someone is home. But those timers were cheap devices with an electric motor inside. I never trusted them and given how warm they used to get, I sometimes wondered if they were a fire risk.
Recently I bought some "WiFi" bulbs. I use them instead of the wall timers. I can control them via an app on my iPhone. I can set up timers or turn them on and off at will.

Not sure who's paying $250 for one either. I got ours for $50 after (2) rebates from our electric company and natural gas company. They're offering them for free (Google Nest models) after instant rebates now. I've been tempted to get one and resell it !- Joined

Does it allow for remote monitoring of temps and remote changes to temperature settings? (Useful to those of us who live in cold climates and travel (in normal times...)
Does it allow for the remote changing of temp settings? Useful in a seasonal property where it sits at 50 degrees unless someone is there - nice to have it at temp before you get there..

Well, we have extreme temps and the A/C runs hard, when at work you can save by clicking up the A/C and have it start cooling more when you’re home in the evening. Depending on the house size a normal electric bill in the summer can be $300-$700.
IoT enabled clothing is starting to show up on the market. Do not need. "Gadzooks! Someone has hacked my pants!"
Which you can do all by hand by your logic... You don't need the programmable one either...
The topic was most ridiculous. A thermostat is actually pretty useful. Even your point about programmability plays into that.
What about when travelling from your own home? It gets to -30F at times here - nice to know the heat is still running when you are away. Frozen pipes ain't cheap (and yes, its happened in my family).
Indeed. Pre-pandemic we would routinely travel to the inlaws about once a month. Only 200 miles away but still. Might be nice to know that the house is ok and all, not coming home to any surprises.
Some of my coworkers have security cameras and can see what is going on at home at any time. Packages being dropped off, kids doing their homework, etc. My boss has some footage of the bear that took out his garbage cans at his vacation home.
I think our washer/dryer has WiFi, and I'm pretty sure my wife set them up, more because she could than any other reason. Only took a couple days to get used to the music--they play a short ditty when done.
