I think Les Paul used to play guitar...

I never thought that Alex Lifeson would be influential in guitar circles but as it turns out, many of the newer guitarists credit Rush as an influence.

7 pages and not one mention of Steve Howe.

influential? no list can start w/o Robert Johnson, along w/ many other Depression era blues guys who died in obscurity. there would be no rock w/o them. add Chuck Berry to the list, and Bo Diddley.

Brandon, we went through this last year. Dean guitars are not the best. They may be your personal choice, but that doesn't make them the "best".
And...it doesn't matter how good the guitar is, if the person playing it doesn't know what they're doing.

I ain't no ghee-tar expert or anything but Dean is good if you play hard aggressive metal. I'm partial to Jackson but Dean is similar. Having said that I'd prolly have a room filled with Gibson and Gretsch with the odd Fender, Jackson and Rickenbacker. But yeah a guitar is only as good as the idjit playing it.

And being the very first guitar "hero", he's prolly had a bit of influence.

Well They Are The Best For Certain Genres, You would be more likely to see someone playing A Dean Razorback for metal. I Own A fender, gibson, jackson, and two deans. They All work for different genres. but deans are my personal choice for the best.

The most influential, Not my favorite would be Hendrix,Jimmy Page look and listen to what they do with their playing style after that Randy Rhodes the first player to use classical influences in his playing while playing fast. Yngwie Malmsteen is fast AND one of the first players to sound like Bach and the first guitarist to do sweep picking in Rock music. Matthias Jabs of the Scorpion is a player who alot of new guitarists are influenced by. Adrian Smith and the other guitarist in Iron Maiden as well as Glen Tipton and K.K Downing of Judas Priest influenced alot of newer guitarist to do harmonies. Eddie Van Halen brought out tapping.
And Finally, Les Paul was the first person to use a guitar that was the basis of the modern guitar construction as well as the first person to use an effects pedal in front of his amp (It was called the Les Paulveriser).
