I want to stock an assortment of semi-junky hose clamps for the Sunday night emergency repairs.

Would SAE 8, 10, 12, 20, 24 be the most common sizes of hose clamps for Passenger Cars and CUV’s? Looking to cover engine/transmission oil cooler hoses (8/10/12), radiator hoses (20 and 24) and heater core hoses (10 and 12).

Thanks.

Have you really had hose clamp failures?

I bought a few sizes of constant tension hose clamps so if I have to remove a hose in truck or boat I can put back the better constant tension hose clamp.

I've had them rust to failure on older cars, either on the car, or break when I remove them. But that's probably not too common in California.
I have a random selection of them with a few more of the smaller sizes as you can daisy chain them for a bigger hose if needed.

At work those common sizes are the ones that shops order in bulk boxes of 10 the most. But larger ones that can fit on air intake tubes for a quick fix as needed are surprisingly popular as well so I wouldn't count them out. They're pretty cheap so you might want to consider adding them to inventory - unless you just never need those.

Thanks. Can you confirm which sizes are the most common ones you sell? I checked the ID of the common hoses I see (and added 1/4 to 1/2” to arrive at an OD), and that is how I arrived at the sizes listed in the OP.

I keep almost every constant tension clamps for my Nissans in my spare parts, but I still keep a huge collection of these normal worm gear clamps around as well. You never know, and they have saved me. However I have been accumulating for years.

I agree that you must buy the Ideal brand made in USA. The others are complete garbage. However I have only been able to find them in the box of 10 - not the individuals.

I would simply keep it simple and get 1", 2", 3" and a couple 4". You can usually squeeze the larger ones down small enough if your in a real bind. If you want to be really thorough. add a 1/2 and 1 1/2 and your likely good.

I thought only us nuts from the industrial world kept spares on hand. Good for you.

I will add - if you tighten down a big box clamp the tag end - the metal piece sticking out - will skew to the side not stay in the same plane as the clamp. This shows that something it mechanically wrong and the force at the screw is not even. A Ideal clamp won't do this.

I like constant tension clamps but I believe the screw clamps have been given a bad wrap because of poorly made clamps, not the concept in general.

This is our clamp assortment. An outside company handles stocking of these along with a lot of shop supplies, Basics Etc (they rock). Most of our hoses are upstairs and these are at the head of the stairs so when I sell a hose I stop and find what clamps fit and go back downstairs. They are billed to shop supplies. There are some part numbers for the devil designed (but yes superior) clamps but on a lot of applications, Ford says to acquire clamps locally. It is nice when new hoses come with the clamp glued to the hose with a clip to pull once it is in place.

ABA appears to be Swedish - likely also very good.

Tridon / Ideal is good.

Chinese stuff from the big box will strip out pretty quick - bad steel, bad screw, bad assembly.
I ordered ABA nova/original for the smaller sizes and Waveseal for the larger sizes.

I just have a universal set that includes a couple of each size from very small to large - costs like $15 and is for emergency use or whenever I need a clamp.

I’ve bought DuPage brand off Amazon - they are made in Germany or Sweden by one of the OEMs to Mercedes and VW(GEMA or ABA). They seem to work fine in a pinch.
