Very nice quote. Saburo Sakai was amazing. His book makes a great read. If Japan could have replaced the naval pilots like him lost through attrition during the war, our cost to win would have been higher by an order of magnitude.
 
I've been geeking out on books like that for a long time.

Saw my dad's call sign in a Chuck Carlock book....that was probably my favorite. But Samurai! is one of the top reads.
 
They even tried an experiment that installed more machine guns in a B-17 to act as an escort.

They could absorb damage that would down just about any other bomber. But after Black Thursday unescorted deep daylight raids stopped for a time.
 
Interesting, I read that 124406 was about 90% severed yet made it back. The tail gunner was ecouraged to come forward but the tail started to flutter so he went back into position for the Long flight home.
