Dodge came out with a new oil spec and contracted with Pennzoil and was, for a long time, factory fill and the only one to meet the spec. My mother-in-law has her Dodge serviced at the dealer and they use Pennzoil. But why a 2010 3.5l uses 10w30 baffles me. Northern Wisconsin where it's commonly -20 to -30F. It's a know sludger.
It's not that complex.
Mobil was the factory and service provider for Daimler-Chrysler (and is still for Mercedes). When FIAT purchased Chrysler, they tossed the Mobil contract and gave it to Pennzoil. Mobil was rather incensed by this decision and subsequently didn't pursue certifying their higher tier Mobil 1 product line for the Chrysler approvals. They did however, retain them for their less expensive "super" product line.
