I e-mailed Mobil recently and inquired about the GIII issue with their Mobil 1 oil. They replied that their synthetic oils are 100% synthetic oil with PAO and specialized additives added. Mobil said they do not use any convential oil for their base stock concerning their synthetics.

Group III is legally 100% synthetic. Notice that they said "100% synthetic with PAO". Why would they add the phrase "With PAO" if it's already all PAO??

That's a clever way to fool you.

Also... next time you call or email, request a real first & last name for later reference.

they probably lied to you. it's like asking a cop about quota existance or asking mc donald's if their food is unhealthy. you really think the company will tell the truth bedmouthing itself? i once asked mobil why they didn't include oci in their mobil1 description unlike other oils, among other questions. they didn't answer to that in their reply.
I also asked subaru about torque split in thei awd with AT, again no straight answer. never trust big companies.

here we go again

You shouldn't have mentioned you were an Okie (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Mobil 1 is a mixture of Group III, PAO and AN or Ester basestocks, depending on the particular oil you are talking about. There top tier products, like their MC oils, 0w30 racing oil, and Delvac 1 are still PAO based. Its just the cheaper mass marketed stuff that has gone the Group III route. Call it the "Wally World" effect...;)

Because the 0w20'S AND 0w30's are still PAO, my best guess, but what do I know?

Besides, my stash of PP is so large compared to my OCI, who needs Mobil1 anymore anyway?

I am liberated!

Oh, and really, how many of us NEED that -54F pour point anyway? The GroupIII/IV qualitative component of the dispute isn't so much the issue but rather, as usual, we're talking PRICE. M-1 starts doling out 2-4-1 5W20 SuperSyn, we'll be all over it, just like the PP. XOM will be our new heros once again.

In SPITE of their bottom-tier, watery, low-add, crummy, ethanol-laden gasoline..

Main reason I use Mobil 1, is my OEM (Ford) certifies the oil in the viscosities I use. Can't say that for most other synthetic oils on US market.

Agreed. I only use Shell V-Power and mid-grade fuels.

To make sense of what Mobil is saying one needs to understand what is meant by "100% synthetic." I don't think anyone doubted that Mobil1 was formulated with some amount of PAO's. The question is how much is PAO and ester and how much of the 100% synthetic is Group III. I'm not sure Mobil's reply has shed a lot of light on that question.

That -54c pour point is important if you live in cold areas. The ability to "pour" is a very thick honey like pour. In fact, it would not be likely to do much pumping at this thickness.

For example, Delvac 1, 5-40 at -10f is much thicker than you might expect. Try a quart of your favorite in the freezer.

Huh? Ford is down to two viscosities, 5w20 and 5w30, for 99% of their gasoline applications. What viscosities of synthetic oils do you require that you can't find in other brands that meets Ford specs?

Or maybe it's because you have to buy oil in the UK?

I have-yet to find a "real" mid-grade fuel. All the ones I see listed as mid-grade are 89 octane.

They sell us 87 octane as regular
They sell us 93 octane as premium
But no one wants to give us 90 octane as mid-grade.

Boycott that 89 octane stuff. Don't buy it. Odds are, your vehicle runs the same on 87 octane - or it needs 93 octane for other reasons. If nobody buys the 89 octane, then either the price gap from 87 to 93 gets reduced, or the gas companies start giving us the real medium octane - so the octane scale works evenly ... ie... 87-90-93.

No disrespect to the thread poster.. But this is probably the 50th thread on this issue. How many more people are going to contact mobil and post a thread about the reply they got?
