Mobil one extended performance 5w-30

I'm also a little disappointed that they would unfairly compare oils with taking the "standard" 3x beyond it's recommended OCI (oil manufacturer?/OEM rec.). Sure it's going to work to their advantage in terms of visual display. In the low-res images/vid, I could make out some wear (loss of polish replaced with scour marks), on the bearings, but then again I'm not tearing down engines and relative experience that would lead me to form opinions beyond guesses as to just how worn or how long things might hold up. Plasti-gauge anyone? Numbers/raw data, not opinions wanted advertisers.

Without doing a search myself, I recall a posted image of an engine from an Audi with the valve covers removed. This individual had used syntec 5w-50 up to that point (10k OCI IIRC), and the engine was in like condition as the one posted earlier that was supposably run with redline.

Question - Isn't it gasoline/remaining products of after evaporation in the oil that tend to develop varnish? I suppose to that such evaporative processes of the lighter base oil components could also go to support varnish formation...or is this a faulty ASSUMPTION?...A lot swimming around in the head and I'm lazy as to go through my notes.

Take care.

Pardon me if I'm stating rubbish here, but aren't the "EP" oils with like amounts of additives as the regular M1 gone by, while the now regular M1 is of overall lower additive concentration...not that it's not capable for the shorter OCI recommendation for the average?

Actually, look carefully at the video. It was edited to appear that he was talking about the engine as a whole. However, in context he was talking about the bearings. It was at that point that the video was edited.

I have no idea if the video was edited or not. To me that is pure speculation, but they very well could have done that.

I haven't been impressed with the Tbn retention of M1 EP.

Were these tests and results conducted and validated by an independent third party?

In many cases, our additive suppliers actually conducted the testing. This is very common in our industry and deemed an acceptable practice. Of course, this is in addition to the already extreme testing completed by ExxonMobil engineers. (Updated March 2006)

Interesting....XOM does produce M1's base oils and most of the oil, but not all.

I run this oil 15,000 miles and have for some time in a Honda Accord. I do use 1 quart of 15w-50 EP and 3 of the 5w-30. The TBN was over 4 in a 11,000 mile UOA to test it out. No varnish and sludge to report. Excellent UOA at 11,000 so I think 15,000 is just fine. People who think it can't go 15,000 have never run it 15,000 miles would be my guess.

No discoloring, NOTHING.

Not even the "discolor" that happens with any oil...

PS: BTW: motor above has 80k miles on it. VAD's photo.

Purrdy...so clean you can eat off it. What engine is that just courious. I used to use Redline too.

I wouldn't be happy with the way this engine looks either, but I can't think of an oil under the same conditions that would have looked better? Take that back, Delvac 1/S3k/RL probably would have kept it even cleaner. Amsoil TSO??

Most of the driving was stop n go.

You did not look close enough. My VW valve cover uses a reusable gasket so there is no trace of a gasket if you wipe the head clean. Look closely at the bolt holes and the outside of the head for the silhouette of the valve cover.

I wonder what all the other engines looked like? Think they chose the best of the bunch?

azera,

Mobil 1 EP and the taxi test? You had to go and hit the hornet's nest with that tennis racquet, didn't you?

Use whatever you want in your new ride. I believe EP is over-priced, especially for 6k mile OCIs. I would have zero problems with using Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 in that engine, followed by M-1 0w20 (now don't be frightened by that "zero") or Amsoil's 0w20.

Your warranty is still intact with OCIs at 7,500 miles or less. I'd run PP 5w20 for 7k miles and have Terry Dyson perform a UOA on it for a baseline. Three more OCIs down the road (literally) and I'd run another UOA through Dyson Analysis to see how things are holding up.

My two cents. Good luck.

im not impressed.

i have had and still have better looking engines with dino @100K.

i think 10K is the upper limits of this oil. but then who wants to pay 3 times the price for an oil that goes twice as long with suspect UOA's in some cases.

i have always and still will stay clear of M1.

:)
