Oil Gang,

My nephew has a 2000 Dodge 1/2 ton PU with a V6 engine. The truck has 83,000 miles on it.

I am wondering how wise it would be to pour in some Mobil Delvac 15w40, considering the oil as a high mileage solution????

If it has no leaks, that might make a good summer oil for heavy duty use and 5k+ mi drains. He may lose a bit of fuel economy, although not much. I would probably just use 10W-30 Maxlife(Valvoline's high mileage oil). In winter, I would just use one of several available 5W-30 high mileage oils if the truck is driven in Colorado.

2k Dodge 1/2 ton v6 = 3.9L if I remember right.

It wouldn't necessarily be "high" mileage for a 3.9 if it had 183,000 miles on it. And no matter what, 83k is happy early-mid-life.

If you just need to get rid of the Delvac, it won't hurt the 3.9. If you're going to beat the living snot out of it (extremely hard towing in hot weather) then it might be a small benefit. Otherwise, go with a good 10w30, 5w30, or 0w30. Mopar LA-block engines don't need heavy oil. They'll tolerate it for the most part, but then they'll tolerate most anything.
