Havoline, Mobil Super 5000 and Pennzoil Conventional are all excellent oils. You can't pick a bad oil out of them. Since you seem to want to try something different, I suggest going with the Havoline since it's on sale. Get enough to do at least two OCIs so you can see how the oil feels in your vehicle. Afterwards get some Pennzoil Conventional and try that for a couple OCIs. Afterwards, pick whichever one you liked best, and go with it. If you didn't notice any difference, then simply go with whichever is cheapest because they're all high quality oils.

On a serious note, I haven't been too impressed with the specs on Valvoline conventional, but for $14, it wouldn't hurt to try that too.


All the major brands will do the job nicely. Valvoline conventional does leave something to be desired where virgin oil analysis is concerned but we have seen countless uoa where this oil performed admirably.

Valvoline is an excellent oil. Valvoline is kind of funny because sometimes you'll look at it's additive package and it looks very plain, or sometimes lacking when compared to some oils that seem to go overboard. However, if you look at the used oil analysis, it seems to always put up good numbers, and pictures of engines with the valve cover removed on engines that used valvoline consistently tend to show very clean engines. I wouldn't hesitate to use Valvoline conventional if that's what I had around.

The only issue I can possibly raise with Valvoline, and this is very minor, is that it's one of the oils that uses Sodium as an additive. Nothing wrong with sodium as an additive, but if you're doing a used oil analysis is can sometimes mask coolant in the oil b/c Sodium is what often indicates the presence of coolant. This shouldn't keep anyone away from Valvoline, just something to keep in mind so you don't get false positives for coolant, and likewise know to make sure the number doesn't spike which could indicate coolant being present.

Really any of the oils I saw listed on this thread (MS5K, Pennzoil conventional, Havoline, Valvoline, Quaker State Conventional, Kendall/Trop Artic) are all excellent oils that anyone can use with confidence.

Locally, AAP oil appears to be in Chevron shaped containers. $19.99 everyday price IIRC.. But not 100% sure it's Chevron made. Oreilly also has Havoline synthetic with filter for $15 AMIR.

OP I assumed you'd be able to find more in your location seeing how you're from Texas.

Valvoline conventional is a decent oil, but Pennzoil conventional wins IMO. Plus it's more $$$ at WM.

We have a great selection but there are certain oils that are harder to find or expensive when you do. Formula shell, Kendall, Gulf, Motorcraft Full Synthetic, any Amsoil product, etc.

Fun fact, all the SOPUS products are made about 12 miles from my house. We have plenty of oil here!

When the price is really low people Buy That Oil and continue using it because they think they like it...lol

Quaker State Conventional is on sale here in k mart for $13.00 for 5 qts. i had to double check because their regular price is way up there like an auto parts store

I haven't ever used Quaker State oil, but for $13 it would be worth a shot. I try not to spend any more than $15 dollars-ish for conventional oil.

Used Mobil Super 5000 in the wife's SUV for years (now trying Kendall blend...curious). About 99% in town stop & go. Annual OCs.

Using Pennzoil Conventional in my daily driver ~ 95% highway. 5k OCs.

Not seeing any problem with either and don't expect any.
