Most engine oils are blended with an “additive package”

Additives are blended together as a package by a supplier

Additive package is blended with base stocks for specific viscosity grades

Blender is not necessarily the oil developer

May have limited technical support at customer level

Mobil 1 is component blended for “Best In Class” formulation

Synthetic base oils and additives individually selected for maximum performance

Mobil 1 development and blending is done “in house”

Advantage of a large lubricant development organization as a resource

Dedicated technical motorsports support group (Global)

I'm new to the forum and have an interest in the truth about motor oils...From doing amateur "research" and formulating an overall "opinion" from that, I had pretty much settled on Mobil 1 as being the best overall without having to order oil through the mail or pay some representative a huge markup, which I'm still not willing to do, but...is there anything wrong with Mobil 1, per say? And, if so, what specifically?

No, it is a fine product and many of us have been using it for decades.

Overk1ll,

That's right. I've used M1 oils for 31 years and has served me well. With 10,000 mile OCIs all these years and no failures at all with very clean engines even with 200-300,000+ miles.

Agree 100%.

Some people claim it doesn't protect as well as it could. Let's just say that claim is open to debate.

Either way, based on the best info we have, your assessment is probably right.

I don't buy into the PP is cheaper thing. Current retail price for M1 at any local auto parts store is $6.99 which is the same as PP, VSP, Syntec, etc. Which, I have seem people pay full price while waiting in line for any one of these brands.

Also, if we go by the current pricing at Walmart it is $20 for PP and $22 for M1 for a 5qt jug. If we say prices are locked in at that amount and you do 2 OCI's per year based on only 5qts that's only a 4 dollar difference per year. That would take 25 YEARS to get to a difference of $100 dollars. That's long of a spread to see any real significance in price just doesn't seem like a real argument based on price IMO.

Not another M1 hate thread now...

Funny their 0W-40 is a flagship oil. Seems to me to be used in all of the highest applications!

Sometimes I wonder if Pennzoil has some kind of special rebate for people who take potshots at Mobil 1 on BITOG. I use Mobil 1 but certainly do not say PP is a bad oil. In fact, for a Group III oil, it's probably one of the best. I just wonder why so many PP users feel the need to bash on Mobil 1 (and those who use it). It's really not productive or helpful in these discussions, and it's turning BITOG into a place for fanboys to mouth off to each other instead of what this site used to be - an ongoing discussion about the search for excellence in motor oils and other lubricants. So there.

Interesting find. Also interesting the presentation is about M1 Racing Oil, but they state that Euro Car Formula 0w40 is in the IRL engines. And, I understand that racing oils should be friction modified to help generate more power through reduced friction. Why would racing oils be " aggressively friction modified – much higher levels than Mobil 1 for passenger cars."
It seems that FM level should be present in passenger car oils also, for better fuel economy. Perhaps they blend to a "good enough" or a price point in passenger car oils? Not being a smarty, just wondering....

Yeah I don't know the answer to that. I would guess cost is one factor and different operating conditions another.

The technology often trickles down with time.
