Why though? ZDDP content?
That and it shears down pretty quick. Valvoline VR1 racing oil is the same way. It is only meant for single day heavy track use.

It is a single purpose oil that is not designed for long term use. It is a misconception that "Racing" must mean better when it comes to daily application use but this not the case.

Nor does mixing it with API spec oils make any frankenbrew better.

Thank you sir. Been a while since there was a racing oil discussion that I can recall.

Really? From what i was reading, it resists shear better than regular oil.

For the Hi-Temp Hi-Shear Viscosity @ 150 C 1x10(6) sec(-1), mPa.s, ASTM D4683, it has a value of 3, which is pretty solid, no?

I think that it is not recommended for daily use simply because of the zinc and emissions. If you have no direct injection and high flow cats or no cats, I think this can be used in an engine for some time?

Thinking about using it in my gto since I put only 1 or 2k miles a year now.

I just ordered 18 quarts shipped to me. If it doesn’t get cancelled, I’ll Frankenbrew it with some old HD30 oil to make some oil for my pre-1980 vehicles. My reasoning is that the racing oil lacks a lot of detergents for long-term use, but the HD oil has plenty of those. I do 1K OCIs on my pre-80 fleet anyway, since it takes 2+ years to put on 1K.

This is Mobil 1's reason why...

So it's not necessarily because it will not last for long intervals but rather because the zinc and phosphorus will coat emissions components and high calcium is bad for DI engines with respect to LSPI.

I did do a little more reading on HTHS. I know that is a big focus for users on here and I never really gave it too much thought because I didnt a lot about the scale regarding good vs not ideal values. Apparently 3.0 is not so great. Under 3.0 is less than ideal and 3.5 is generally the threshold for determining a more solid value. The 3.9 in 0w50 is better.

Found this in the Racing Oils FAQ. Woops I see that is in your screenshot above @wemay. I'll leave it here anyway to be in text form too and available via search/google.

You say that Mobil 1 Racing™ oils are not for street use. Why is that? Does that mean I can't use these oils if my race car is also my daily driver?
Automotive street use oils that meet the latest industry standards are required to have a lower level of zinc and phosphorus anti‐wear chemistries than oils formulated years ago. The latest automotive street use engine oils are designed to be compatible with emission control equipment. Mobil 1 Racing oils are formulated with anti‐wear (zinc/phosphorus) chemistries at twice the level of automotive street oils to provide enhanced protection of highly loaded valve train systems found in some race engines. Based on the high level of anti‐wear chemistries, Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for street use.

I just returned my 12 qts and lost the 4.99 shipping and after a bad week did not want to fight for it.
If you didn’t know anything about AutoZone’s return policy,
I WILL TELL YOU THAT they just took all 12 quarts back to the waste oil tank,
unscrewed the caps,
and then dumped them in. 😣😔😣😔

The oil was delivered yesterday. It was the first time I got oil in the original box (but not inside another box). No leaks! I call it a win. Maybe the fact that the box shows it contains bottles of oil means the delivery employees are less likely to toss it around.

Jealous. I was hoping that by ordering a multiple of 6 I would get original boxes. They're much easier to stack.

Why?
Why so many??

Think of it more along the lines of a “high ZDDP additive” - not something you would fill your entire crankcase with
I guess you can always blend it with some 0w16 to make a 0w20, those low ash 0w16 would blend really well with this high zddp stuff at 50% I think. Or if you are using it to engine flush those zddp would really help if the solvent dilute it too thin.
