I just called Mobil and they said the new Mobil 1 extended performance filters should be on the shelves at AutoZone, Checkers and Advanced Auto. Anyone seen them yet?

Okay, time for my question: I have decided to run my wife's RX330 with a 10K interval using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. BTW, at 10K, I will have Terry read things out for me.

I am leaning towards the new Mobil 1 filter (I haven't seen them on the shelves at AutoZone yet). Opinions please: What filter should I run for that interval? Mobil 1, Fram X2, Wix, Napa Gold, K&N, Toyota/Lexus OEM?

Thanks.

I only have experience with the current Mobil 1 filter and the Purolator Pure One filter. My vote is for the Mobil 1 filter for 10k OCIs, or Pure One with 5k filter changes.

I would use the Lexus OEM filter!! My second choice out of the listed filters would be Napa Gold. I would change the filter every 6 months reguardless of mileage! Now technicly you should be able to run a single filter for the duration of the 10,000 miles but why push your luck! They little bit of oil a Lexus filter holds is insignificant. I doubt it holds more than 1/4 of a quart!

How bout the (Purolator) Valvoline Maxlife filters, they should be extra capacity by definition. They look very well made internally..

If you plan to cut the filter open at 10k & post pics here, I recommend the Fram X2. It looks like a very good filter & we BITOGers need some good post-mortem pics of the X2.

If you're not going to cut it & post pics, my vote goes to the M1.

Wix is a great filter i would recommend them to anyone!
I agree that the fram X2 is overpriced but it is a great filter.
I took a used XG3387a from my 95 cavalier apart a while back and the construction is first rate not at all like the crappy orange extraguard filters.
Do a seach in the oil filter section i know that people have posted picts of a fram X2 cut apart.

I am running a Fram X2 on it now (with a 40/60 mixture of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and Mobil 5000), but had planned on changing the oil at 5,000 miles. After thinking about things, it just makes sense to run Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

As far as the choices I listed, I am not set on those, but I want the filter to be available at retail outlets (in Colorado). I do like the ease of shopping and getting things at one store (i.e. which is why I am running a Fram X2 and Mobil mixture right now--all available at Wal-Mart).

It is kind of ironic, I run the Audi OEM filter out to 10,000 miles (the filter is labeled as a 30,000km filter) and don't even hesitate, but for some reason I wasn't sure if any others could make it.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate your thoughts.

Any filter that meets OEM specs "should" be at least good for 15000 miles - This is providing those vehicles have 7500 mile normal service OCI, and filter change every other oil change.

You are kidding right? From my findings "most" filters that "should" be good for OE manufacturer recommended intervals fall far short of the mark. That is the whole problem with this oil filter thing, the manufacturer does not release the "spec." and there are no testing standards the filters MUST meet. Basically what I have found is there is a lot of crap filters out there, coming from a few manuafacturers.

Definitely worth the extra money for a premium filter. Heck, buy a Premium Plus Purolator they are cheap and a good filter.

I'd grab the K&N, Pureone, or Mobil 1 filter.
If you're UOAing, then you can use a different one for your next 3 10k intervals with the same oil for comparison.

And, if there's room for an oversized, thats another option for you.

Mobil 1 full flow filter - no question!

Does anyone worry about the spring/BPV on the Fram X2? It is metal seated against metal. Could it leak? It might be okay, since my bath tub uses a metal plug for the metal drain hole and it seems to hold water just fine

No, I am not kidding. I disagree with your analysis soley on the fact that several manufacturer use these aftermarket filter makers to manufacture filters for the OEM. The standards have to be given in that case, otherwise the filter could not be made properly. If there is no 'spec' that filter manufacturers must follow, then how can you recommend ANY filter to someone? Sure, that Purolater may LOOK like a good filter, but according to your posting, there is no spec for them to go by, so how would you KNOW it was a good filter, and with what specs could you compare it to?

While I agree, there are what I feel, some really crappy canisters passed off as filters, by certain manufacurers, If they passed teh Govts' marketing requirements, they *should* be able to handle it..

Don't know about the new Mobil 1 filters, but a Pure one should be good for 10k. I wouldn't use the X2 due to it's poor ADBV.

The Fram X2 (extra guard) is a great filter....I know we all hate Frams but this is a well made filter and not that pricey if you pick it up at WalMart.

Any of the filters you listed are good choices. The only one that I don't think anyone can really comment on is the new Mobil 1 filter, as I don't believe anyone has seen (or at least cut one apart) yet.

I've used the FRAM X2 several times, and honestly believe it is an excellent filter, regardless of what people think about its' "poor ADBV". It is pricey, but I've still found it cheaper than the K&N's and (old) Mobil 1's.

P.S.-
oilguy3, the X2 stands for 'Extended', not 'Extra'. The 'Extra Guard' is the basic orange FRAM filter.

Whoops, I meant extended guard. They don't make an "X2" for all aplications so they call some of them "extended guard".

I was sort of bummed out the other day at Wal-Mart. I went to look for an X2/XG for my VW GTI 1.8T, but they don't make one for it.
