Mobil 1 Noisy? Audio Recordings!!

I don't think anyone can win this recording thing. You might as well have asked me to prove how I know that Tandoori chicken tastes good. Noisy means different things to different people.

What were you expecting? Even if you got ridiculously lucky, and had 50 people give you a comparative sound recording with M1 and another brand, in a controlled environment, recorded with the same equipment, in the same way, and every forum member listened to the recordings on the exact same setup, that still wouldn't tell you jack ****, because everyone would still disagree what on noisy and not noisy was, and I'd bet a million bucks that you would get a bunch of recordings that all sounded completely different, and gave you mixed and/or unusable results anyway.

Even in the absolute most extreme circumstance, if all 50 sound recordings clearly and undeniably demonstrated that the engines recorded were XX dB louder or quieter running M1, you still wouldn't have any meaningful amount of data to extrapolate from, and people could still disagree on whether that amount of noise increase made their engines "noisy" or not, or whether they were bothered by that noise to begin with, even if they had deemed it "noisy", or whether or not they would stop buying M1 because they had deemed it "noisy". ****, maybe some people really like noisy engines, and it would be the other way around, who knows...

The easiest way for you to get your agenda across is probably to vehemently argue the point that the reports of M1 "making" an engine noisy are subjective, as is the term "noisy" itself, and that many factors could be in play in an event like the one you are talking about. You also have plenty of people on here who have given testimonials that M1 does not "make" their engines "noisy", so just fight fire with fire, and be happy with that. Otherwise, this will just end up in some epistemic cluster fock, and it will get shut down. How in the name of Almighty *** did this thread make it to 4 pages?

bighead- that's MORE than twice you've made a completely useless and off-topic post in a thread specifically asking for recordings and not excuses. Nice job- you're making the M1-noise crowd look really good with all the data you are posting. [/QB]

And this makes more than a few times you're trying your hardest to discredit the ones who refuse to take part in your stupid little experiment. I think you've made it clear to this forum that you're more than overly obsessed with something that doesn't even pertain to you. So, with that said, you my friend, need to learn to let sh*t go. Life is too short to be having an anurism over trying to prove or disprove something that, once again, does not affect you. Talk about a waste of bandwidth..

I put Mobil 1 in my engine and it sounded like this
http://www.khaaan.com/

Actually, the 5-30 BMW oil was louder than my 0-40 Mobil 1. Granted, this was after reading all the posts at BITOG, so perhaps my ears have been skewed. But I think it is just the higher weight at operating temps.

The purpose of this thread is to get the previously numerous and vocal Mobil 1 noise complainers to post up examples for the benefit of fellow BITOG'ers. However, they seem to be really quiet all of a sudden. [Wink]

Why didn't you ask me nicely to record the SACK-O'NAILS noise when I had Mobil 1 0W-40, the racket-maker par excellence, in the engine three years ago? You're a little late.

speedtc- and yet you continue to read and post in a thread you think is dumb. You really liked the short bus, didn't you?

You obviously have no clue what this thread is about- as I've stated numerous times, it is something for all interested BITOG'ers (and there are a LOT of em), not just to prove a point.

Those of you who assume (as our not-so-bright friend speedtc has) that I am an M1 fanatic are incorrect- I currently have Havoline 5w30 in my vehicles and I try different oils quite a bit.

johnsmith- you make some good points, but as for reaching a consensus based on the results, that's not the point of this exercise- it is for each individual BITOG'er to judge the results for him/herself. I'm not trying to prove anything one way or the other- just to get some semi-objective data out there for everyone to check out.

The fact that there were SO MANY people complaining about M1 noise earlier, and exactly ZERO stepping up to offer to even TRY to make a recording is what is hilarious.

fwiw, I was saying how smooth and quiet the Havoline Semi I replaced Mobil 1 with a while ago. I sorta looked at it the other way around, not that M1 was loud and coarse, but the Havoline was smooth and quiet.

I will say that I would believe and trust many members here if they said there was a big difference with M1. Now, I'm asking for that confidence in return. I've had my hearing checked in the last 2 years and spent 1000s of hours working in major recording studios, Mobil 1 made a LOT more noise. I believe the db level could be measured in the right conditions.

"There was a noticable difference in how my engine sounded going from M1 to GC, and it was pretty much instantaneous"
Bighead, I also thought I heard difference between 20W-50 and 5w30 during startup, but others have told me that I was well ... hearing things? I still hear things just keep quiet about it.
Other than that this experiment would have to be done in a controlled (to some extent) environment , best done at night with little ambient noisse, it ain't as easy as it seems.

A similar puzzle - If a man speaks in a forest, and there's no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

toocrazy- you never cease to amaze me with your insightful posts. Keep em coming to ensure everyone knows why you have that nickname

I'm actually the calm type. I don't get the vehemence with which you've attacked the theory of "noisy" performance with the M1. It makes no sense.

What is so difficult about others' contention regarding the issue? I run M1 in all of my vehicles the last, I dunno, 20 years, including the 85 Nighthawk S aircooled 700-4 with 80,000 miles on it. I'm as big a fan of Mobil 1 as there is, and folks deriving a different ("noisy") result from my own is plausible to me. I'm at peace with it. What's YOUR problem?

And *I* am crazy?

Don't think so pal, but carry on..

Sounds Great!

PROOF positive!

Mobil 1 5W20 allows your car to idle without seizing!

Thanks, SX, I'm just kidding. You're a good sport. Problem is, we don't have a comparison with another oil in the same car. The hollow garage is a good environment, though. If the rattle effect was occuring, surely we'd hear it.

The original premise simply doesn't bear up to proper scrutiny.
