Astro- this is yet another example of trying to find a reason not to do the test- saying that I will be biased. Again, this will be educational and of interest to MANY BITOG readers, not just me, if nothing else.

Just look- this thread has received 62 replies in just half a day!

Interesting how we have so many replies, and yet NOT A SINGLE PERSON who has claimed excess engine noise with M1 has volunteered to try recording it vs. another quieter oil. There sure were a lot more people vehement about noise when not being asked to demonstrate it.

How about this: read the original (first) post in this thread. NO EXCUSES, JUST RECORDINGS. What a concept.

why don't you try what i sugested? put forth some of your own effort

eddy- because we had so many M1 noise complainers on the forum in earlier threads, I thought it would be easy to get a sampling. Apparently, all the M1 noise complainers have left the building!

I don't know of any 2500 HD owners around me, and I don't have time to do an extra test. That's why I was hoping someone WHO CLAIMS TO HAVE THE NOISE PROBLEM could do the test as part of their normal OCI on their own vehicle, but it seems nobody wants to backup their claim and provide the BITOG forum with some semi-objective data in addition to that already provided by johnd.

Many have confirmed there is no association with engine wear on used oil analysis. Plus, it's not just to satisfy my curiosity- it is for the benefit of the entire BITOG forum.

I couldn't care less if the increased noise has an effect on wear. I simply don't want to listen to the type noise I heard. If I really did imagine the noise, why did my better half ask me what was wrong when she heard the engine idling? I've owned my car for ten years. I know how the engine sounds, and I do notice when its sound changes.

What benefit are you talking about? Since the commonly accepted view is that noise doesn't matter in terms of engine health and wear, how does "knowing the truth" benefit anyone? If you don't notice any noise increase, then how do you intend to benefit? There's only one way to find out the truth: try various oils in your own engine.

moribundman- when you have threads about much more trivial topics by oil-obsessed BITOG'ers, I'm not sure how you can question the benefit to the forum. A *lot* of BITOG'ers are interested in this topic. Many have not heard the alleged M1 noise in their engines and are curious if it exists in other engines and how it sounds and compares to quieter oils, if so. The purpose of this thread is to get the previously numerous and vocal M1 noise complainers to post up examples for the benefit of fellow BITOG'ers. However, they seem to be really quiet all of a sudden.

Some people can apreciate the sound of a premium musical instrument over an el-cheapo from China. Some people on the other hand can not tell the difference at all. I think more so then an increase in the db level it is a shift in the freq. one ears. Different oil and additives dampen specific audio freq. more then others. I also think that viscoity even of just a few CST points or fractions of CSt also makes a difference.

The above is just my opion but I thinkit is reasonable. People often report oils with thicker viscosity's for their grade and with more additives as quiter. A prime example of this is if someone switchs from M15W30 to GC 0W30 or Redline 5W30.

I also doubt that anything other then an anolog recording and hi fiedility audio system would this study justice. The digital sample of most low end PC software and the mic and sound card will butcher all of the rich harmonics that we really need for this.

maybe we should start a topic on what engine became noisey and what type of M1 and how long ago it was? maybe we could se a patern.

I believe such a topic already exists. Although, i cant find it at the moment.

speedtc- yea, that's why it is one of the most popular threads in this section and has more than 75 posts in just 12 hours. Nobody is forcing you to read every thread- if you don't like a thread, don't read it! More importantly, why post to it? How dense do you have to be to not read threads you are not interested in? And denser yet to post to a thread you're not interested in. Wow.

GMorg- I can't even respond to your post until you tell me what the heck that means. What are "graemlins of monkeys"? How about you translate that into English?

Jeez weez man. Grab a cold one before you blow a vessel.

The little emoticons on the left are call "graemlins" here. He wants one of monkeys tossing poop at each other.
I hope I don't have to explain the rest...

bighead- that's MORE than twice you've made a completely useless and off-topic post in a thread specifically asking for recordings and not excuses. Nice job- you're making the M1-noise crowd look really good with all the data you are posting.

Not surprisingly, I got ZERO takers. After dozens upon dozens of people posting about how horribly loud the valve train noise was using M1 and then how much it quieted down when using other oils, NOT ONE PERSON posted an audio recording to prove their point. Hopefully putting this in its own thread will encourage those people to come forward.

One request: NO EXCUSES, just recordings, please. I'd like to keep this thread on-topic, so either STEP FORWARD and offer to do a test, or please DO NOT REPLY.

Wow. Excuses GALORE, not one who agrees to even give it a TRY. Surprised? Not me. The M1 noise crowd backs away from the plate yet again. Nice.

You must be kidding. If I had tried M1 and had experienced increased engine noise, why would I waste my time dicking around trying to record it in order to prove it you. And even if you do hear it - what then? What are you going to do about it ? All this just so you can believe it ? Ahhh, I don't think so.

This very problem was reported on a Usenet thread just yesterday by an average car owner who's never heard of BITOG and thought he'd try M1 based on advertising.

Sheesh.

Phil
