I have been running Mobil 1 for many years in my Dodge. The check engine light has been on for 2 years or so and the car uses a quart every 2k or so. The dealer was unsure as to why the light was on and mentioned not tightening the gas cap properly. I finally just quit worrying about it and just drove the car. However, yesterday I changed my oil and used Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 instead of my usual fill of Mobil 1 5w30. After driving on this oil about 200 miles the check engine light is no longer on. Can anyone think of why this may be the case? After 2 years of the engine light being on, I don't think this is a coincidence. I have not touched the gas cap since the oil change.

Yes the dealer looked into it when it first started coming on and it did go off. However it just kept coming back on. Changed O2 sensor which helped for awhile, but it just kept coming back on. I was wondering if the oil burning was messing with the emissions and causing it to come on. Not sure if that would be a legitimate reason or not...

might have....i'd check the codes, there is probably an ignition/key procedure for making the CEL flash.

i don't think 1qt every 2000 miles would quickly damage a catalytic converter. maybe over time.

You are right about the "it's a Dodge". I have had plenty of problems with this car. The light is still working so it's not the bulb although I thought the remark was hilarious. I was just wondering if the High Mileage oil reducing burn off might have improved the emissions and made it go out.

Let us know 2k miles and a quarter later if it was the oil! : D

Did you hit any big bumps that might have reconnected something?
