Good for you.

After reading how XOM was paying scientists $10k each to refute Global Warming, I'm thru with XOM products.

Global warming is another subject. So the world is warming.. WE are not the cause, and my uneducated opinion offered for free is worth as much or more than the opinions of thousands of scientists working on grants provided them in order to "reach the conclusion" that man IS to blame. EVERY single opinion that man is to blame is based on "science" bought and paid for by folks with a rooting financial/political interest in blaming man for the warming taking place..

Meanwhile, lows in the DC-Bangor, Maine corridor will be in single digits to well below zero all week.

I agree. Kinda like the Giant Ozone Hole of 1990. Which come to find out is a natural occurring event every 83 years or so.

Not to hijack my own thread; but having lived in the mountains around the world for most of my 53 years...it sure seems like something quite noticeable is happening with climate.

The greatly decreased overall snowfall, the unusually warm temps and other weather changes, and the rapidly shrinking glaciers are hard to ignore. It may ne a natural cycle, man made, or a bit of both.

I suggest we continue this discussion in a new thread in a different part of the forum.

We are all car guys, gear heads, and technically minded, so it should be fun.

Within the big picture of increasing global wealth and increasing expectations of a high quality of life: I support new technology that allow reduced emissions, greater energy efficiency. I think that the status quo is not sustainable and we need to evaluate and improve in every area.

We may agree or disagree on the remaining global oil/ energy supplies, how they affect foreign policy and the likelihood of military conflict and political upheaval.

We may subscribe to different theories about global warming's existence or causes. And we may disagree about the health effects of pollution from transportation, power generation and industry.

But I think we can all agree that these are important subjects it might be fun to debate in a new thread in 'General and Off Topic'. I will start it now.

Subject: Exxon Mobil and global warming research

Now we can get back to this important thread about gloating about our stashes of oil, and our recent dislike of Mobil 1, the drop dead bargain alternative of Pennzoil Platinum, and other great products we can covet and stockpile.

If I were a newbie on this site, I would deduce that Mobil 1 is absolutely horrid and that I should reduce my on-hand supply of Mobil 1 immediately.

Should I just throw out the 4 cases of M1 I have? Would that be the "correct" BITOG feel-good statement du-jour?

I feel bad for the board newbies coming here looking for information and only finding "I hate Exxon/Mobil" or "Mobil 1 is evil". This is NOT the BITOG I know!

I think it is exactly the same BITOG. Many of us had the same reaction to Castrol's switcheroo to Group III.

I am sure that both Castrol Syntec and Mobil 1 are excellent oils...but their pricing and the way they have decided to treat customers with the 'full synthetic' Group III nonsense is why I made a decision not to support them.

I take offense at this sort of hanky panky, and do not want to give my money to such company.

I would still use the Mobil 1 if I had some in stock. But I am celebrating that I now have alternatives and can support my principles.

Group III 'synthetic' is worth $3.00 to $4.00 / quart to me. At $6.22 /quart I feel it is not worth it. I can buy real synthetic oil for that price.

When Pennzoil runs their group III synthetic on promo at $1.00 / quart, I stock up and have some fun with the bargain they provided.

People don't have to agree with me, or my decisions. If someone still thinks Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec is best for them I respect their decision.

Well it looks like someone doesn't like this thread or the one on global warming I started in General and Off Topic.

The global warming thread should be considered locked and we can resume our normal threads.

Hopefully we can still continue to like or dislike corporations based on how we perceive their conduct.

Oh yeah, it's locked.. Meanwhile, anyone advancing a position that's bought and paid for loses credibility with me. That's not politics, even, that's just a lobby..

Meanwhile, anyone with a bought and paid for stash of M1 should gobble it up. As much as I've goofed on XOM, I'd not toss a stash in the trash over past, present and future worming by XOM on the composition of their PCMO. I used to use the stuff for many years, but for quite awhile, there have been much lower cost alternatives that do the same job for a 3 or 5K OCI. For a 7-10K OCI, jeez, with these 2-4-1 deals, rebates and whatnot, how M1, GroupIV OR GroupIII makes any sense at nearly $7.00/quart is beyond me. XOM just NEVER seems to discount the stuff. They apparently don't need to. The brand is probably bulletproof since it's been around long time, they're able to cover up changes in formula and base oil and answer all questions with no answer, and rake in the profits. PCMO at the retail level is a tiny fraction of even a billion dollars over a years' time I'd bet..

Probably no one building a stash of M1 at these prices..

I am the Mobil-tard.

There were some mis-marked shelves at walmart, and I bought a LOT of the 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 5w30.

If the 5 gallon jugs of Mobil 1 were cheap enough I'd still consider buying Mobil 1 as well. I might not , based on principle,

If the Mobil 1 0W-20, 5W-20, 5w30, 0W-40, 5W-40 CJ-4 was on sale at $1.00/qt or $2/qt I think I'd scoop them up. I think I'd do the same with Castrol Syntec.

These are still very good oils, I just don't think they are worth $6.00 / qt.

I'd still feel that both Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec had behaved badly and betrayed their customer base.

When we were early adopters of PAO/ Ester based oils and until recently paid no more than $3.00 to $4.00 per quart of Group IV/ V oil...we may have gotten our money's worth.

Maybe the argument, [ that 'synthetic' engineered molecules in group IV /V basestocks are superior ], is false or these products failed to provide real value. But we as consumers heard the arguments about how the products were made, and some of us decided to purchase synthetic oil and paid the extra money.

Then the oil companies found that legally they could call cheaper basestocks 'synthetic' as well. Refiners could take less expensive oil or refining waste and hydrocrack until they produced something of value: Group III basestocks that might peform nearly as well as Group IV or Group IV.

Now we have a market in which the words 'synthetic oil' have no clear meaning and we can find major name brand synthetic oil for $1.00 / qt up to $6.50 / qt and it might be essentially the same product.

This is sort of what happend with 'organic' or 'natural' food. All food used to be organic and natural. Then as foods became modified, adulterated, even contaminated, some people wanted to look for what might be better or healthier food.

But now 'organic', 'natural', 'pesticide free' and perhaps '0% Trans Fats' might soon mean nothing as major companies find clever ways to use these words to confuse the consumer. Sometimes all it takes is a label to make the same produce 'organic' and sell it for a higher price.

Group III, EOP, and soon GTL basestocks can offer the end user the potential of good to excellent performance for the money. The same basestocks can also offer the manufacturers and retailers high profit margins if marketed correctly or deceptively.

I want to know what I'm buying, and what it is worth. This doesn't mean that I will always make the best decisions, but at least I deserve to shop in a market place free of snake oil salesmen.
