It bugs me no end to see all of the Mobil 1 used oil analysis that seem to have high iron. I am no Mobil 1 hater-I have a 5 quart bottle of Mobil 1 High Mileage right now that I am going to use in my Saturn Ion. But if Mobil 1 keeps displaying high iron results (even in the extended use formula) I will use something else. I will use Pennzoil Ultra or Valvoline Synpower.
The complex explanations as to why Mobil 1 displays high iron in used oil analysis get very tiring after a while. A high iron reading in a used oil analysis troubles me. I am no chemist or oil analysist guy. All I know is that I can use another oil that does not seem to display high iron in used oil analysis samples.

No matter what synthetic I use it shows high copper & SI in the used oil analysis some more than others and virtually none in Mobil 1 samples but it's because my gasket material is leaching into the oil causing it.
So with your logic I should only use Mobil 1 oil then instead of just leaving it alone and just having confidence to know that is what it is as told to me by Terry Dyson. (Not poking at you just playing devils advocate for a minute).
Well it has been over 250K KM's since I found this out and I haven't just used Mobil 1 oils to keep the Copper and SI in my "comfort" zone and the truck runs great, passes emission tests with flying colours, gets better than government posted fuel economy, and is quiet as a mouse with spotless internals so there is a lot to be said for the proper interpretation of the UOA from an experienced party and not just the person who pays for it or else we might all be switching oils thinking we are experts.
Just wanted to offer another consideration for you to think about.

Well, it goes beyond all of that also. Valvoline was claiming that Valvoline Synpower has lower wear than Mobil 1. The Valvoline people ARE oil experts. I think Castrol was openly claining less wear also. Is the advertising by these people dishonest?

I want all of you to understand that I have totally nothing against Mobil 1 oil. Like I said-I have a 5 quart container of Mobil 1 High Mileage in my garage right now that I intend to use after I get done using Pennzoil Ultra.
But it just troubles me that there seem to be a lot of Mobil 1 used oil analysis where high iron is detected. I think that is understandable.
Is there solid evidence that Mobil 1 High Mileage is a good motor oil?

Well, if somebody has seen a lot of disassembled engines and noticed something like varnish buildup in engines that have used Mobil 1 that is interesting. I would like to know more about that.
I am not a chemist or involved in oil analysis. It seems to me that if high iron or high copper is noticed in a certain brand of motor oil in UOA after UOA that would be a possible indication of high wear. Maybe the brand of oil has high iron or high copper to start with but VOAs could be checked for that. Does all of this seem reasonable?
Like everybody else here I would like to just use the best motor oil I can for the least amount of money.
It makes no difference to me if Castrol or Mobil or Pennzoil or Valvoline or Quaker State or whoever turns out to be the best for the most reasonable price. I don't own stock in any of those corporations. I just want to find the best I can and if there are any problem oils I want to find out about that also. I am not trying to start a fight with anybody or put down the favorite oil of anybody. I just want to find a good oil for a good price. And eliminate any oils that might have problems from my list of potential oils.

The varnish comment is interesting because I noticed the exact opposite from all the M1 engines I have torn apart.

As for M1 and price, the only reason I don't use it is because it's way to expensive up here for the performance you get out of it IMO. Canadian pricing seems to be stupidly out of line compared to the U.S. and I would rather pay a few bucks more and have Amsoil or Redline which IMO are far superior. (Just an opinion don't everyone get their nickers in a knot).
I found the picture of his mustang engine that ran nothing but M1 for 330K KM's...
