HIGH IRON

I've been reading about high iron readings in overhead cam engines when using Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance. It also looks like the iron levels are lower when using a conventional oil such as Chevron & Havoline. Does anyone know what is going on with this?

Nothing going on with it. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a very good oil. I wouldn't worry about the Fe levels at all. They are very low. Oil analysis is tricky in that you don't always know where the metals are coming from, what size and whether it's actually engine wear. Don't sweat it.

I have not noticed any Iron issues with Mobil 1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance in my OHC engines at all. I think that the so called valve train wear issue was with the old Mobil 1 Super Syn formula. Mobil 1 works great in most imports OHC engines especialy Toyota and Audi engine.I would not worry about excessive valve train wear with Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I have not tried Mobil 1 since the EP formula was released except for Mobil 1 0W40.

Depends on the engine. I wandered in here checking replies on my thread. For example, based on a number of used oil analysis the Ford 4.0 SOHC that I have throws out a lot of iron. Iron read high on my previous truck with the same engine when I tried Mobil 1 0w30 (for the winter) and much lower with Mobil 1 5w30. My new truck, iron was high with Motorcraft but much lower with Pennzoil Platinum. I'd say it depends on the engine, try some different oils and let the used oil analysis be your guide.

Thanks for your responses. Looks like I will go ahead with the Mobil 1 Extended Performance for my 2006 Nissan Frontier and 2005 GMC Envoy.

My OHC 4.7L uses Mobil 1 Extended Performance and blackstone commented its one of the lowest wearing 4.7's theve seen.
