Mobil 1 ESP vs Quaker State Full Synthetic

It's probably the best oil one can buy off-the-shelf at Walmart. VW 504 00 approval is proof of performance. The only competitor is the 0W-40 unless you're concerned about the ash level.
Now that M1 0W40 FS is SP rated I would think that ash would fall below 1% ?

I don't think VCM has anything to do with this application. I get that ESP is the superior oil on approvals. The OP has us cogitating the quandary of whether to choose ESP or QSFS. That choice does not make much sense, as these two oils are not that close to each other. Still, we are talking about a very nice Honda powerplant, which is a screamer, but probably spends most of its existence in a low-stressed, overpowered situation. Apart from the weird oil choice question, the OP strikes me as someone who takes good care of his car. We already know that he is committed to 5,000 mile oil changes... and most of us espouse the idea that the best oil is more frequent changes. I just don't think oil choice makes a discernible difference here, even though I am acknowledging the empirical superiority of the Euro oils, I think QSFS would do just fine.
Did you catch in opening post that it is tuned car (not to mention that Honda’s execution of DI is somewhere on part VW’s one from 2003)? And that he tracks vehicle?
ILSAC oils should not come 10ft or closer to this engine.

Interesting. I've found Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 ($28), QS Euro 5W-40 ($23), and Castrol Edge Euro 5W-40 ($25) online at Walmart. These are honestly all very cheap to me so price doesn't really matter. Narrowing it down between these 3 and 0W-30 ESP ($28). Can't seem to find 5W-40 Euro Penzoil Platinum Euro.
Of those 3, this would be my order if it involves track:
1. Mobil1 0W40.
2. QSFS 5W40
3. Castrol 5W40 (distant third).

Thank you all for your replies, I've read each one.

Additional info:
- Walmart doesn't have 5W-30 ESP in 5 quart jugs
- I never considered ESP 0W-30, but am leaning that way now
- I'm not just after the best bang for the buck, this was an "attainable dream car" for me so I don't mind spending a bit more to get something better
- These engines do run very hot, especially on track, so a stout oil that deals well with high temperature and loads is important to me, as is a selecting a viscosity that makes sense

Again, leaning ESP 0W-30, seems like a solid choice. Thanks again
For your use case (for the high engine rpm track use),
it's beneficial to have an oil with high levels of anti-wear additives phosphorous and zinc.

Any oil that meets Acea A3/B4 spec and MB 229.50 would be a superior choice.

I would order Mobil 1 ESP X3 or X4 0w-40 with the Autozone deal plus filter and return or throw away the filter. If you want a 5 Qt jug and don’t want to order from Autozone online, just get the FS 0W-40 or ESP 0W-30. They are all good. They all carry multiple Euro approvals including Porsche C40/A40/C30 depending on the oil we are talking about.

Any concerns running a full SAPS like the M1 FS 0W-40 if I'm still running the stock catalytic converter? I may upgrade to a high flow/sport catalytic converter in the future

With your ZDDP concern, buy (SP) Mobil-1 Euro 0w40. Best price is at Walmart.
I keep it in stock and prefer the add-pack over the FS Series. (Our family's GDI / TGDI / MPI engines)

What would be the advantage of the SP add-pack over the FS/Euro in a non oil burner? I’ve been seeing this posted lately and I’m curious why. Euro vehicles have been gdi/tgdi for a very long time.

Sounds like Google is your best friend here. Zero-in on Dexos 1 Gen 3 and SP cert. It lists all the benefits - versus the oils you are currently using in your modern GDIs / TGDIs. I prefer it's lower Calcium - controlled ZDDP and timing chain wear protection benefits.
Lastly, what I like may not be what you like. So carry-on with your favorites and I'll carry-on with mine. I don't need extended drain oils and I use top-tier oils like HPL, Amsoil.....etc.... in SP for other reasons. I like to blend Dexos with non-Dexos SPs..... often 40s with 30s.

Why?.... because I've done it since the 70s and it's still working. I'm currently blending high Ester HPL with high PAO.

It sounds great under the hood of my wife's Kia BTW. But it will get drained in 4-5k. Some like to waste money on everyday bad habits. I like to waste money on twice a year motor oils.
Wait..... it's NOT a waste of money. I'm hoping it's a good investment.

I’m just trying to learn about this recent rise in people recommending SP or Dexos over euro approvals, just in case I’m missing something. When I google the Porsche, Mercedes, and VW test procedures they seem more stringent to me. Dexos raises the bar over API SP but the bar seems pretty low to begin with.

It’s because most of the cars people ask about euro oil’s in in here tend to be non European vehicles so the Americans posting about oil choices tend to be exposed more to dexos in marketing then the euro manufacturer specs

Dexos is arguably better than api or acea specs but not the MB and VW specs
