Hey, Gents!

I recently went with Valvoline Advanced 5w30 for my last oil change with dealer under warranty.

So, in 5,000 miles, I will be out of warranty and I will be doing oil changes myself at home. OCI will stay 5,000 miles, but I am wondering which of these oils will best for year round use in the Ford 3.5.

Which and why?

Flip a coin. Either is still much better than the syn blend motorcraft these usually get. I got a lot of castrol edge 5w-40 since it was on sale for 23.97 in store and online at walmart and I think it still is. Euro 30 and 40's aren't far away hths wise at least with off the shelf ones. Boutique ones can see a bigger viscosity difference.

The 0W-30 seems to be preferred, there are a lot of threads on here comparing the 5W-30 to the 0W-30 ESP. The forumlation of the 5W has changed over time. The stated reasons that 0W is preferred are usually that it has Esters and more PAO base oil compared to the present 5W formulation. I don't know if those factors would correleate with an actual performance benefit in your application or not, but there would probably not be a very noticeable difference.

You don't really need a 0W for Arkansas but in this case the winter grade isn't the only difference. As already inferred though, the differences are probably inconsequentieal so you could shop on price, but that's probably the same too. 0W seems to be more widely available. Sorry it's not more clear-cut.

In Arkansas, 90% hogway driving, and 5K OCI? Zero difference. Get whatevers cheapest, but probably same price. 0W may have a better base oil (or some additional stuff as pointed out above) but since you're dumping it every 5K, probably won't make any difference.

How smooth is the ride on the hogway? 😆

Home of WM (Arkansas) where both 0W30 ESP & 5W30 ESP are available for $27 … Most believe the 0W30 ESP to be the slightly better oil due to esters in the base oil / higher beginning oxidation .

Definately the 0W-30.

No, wait, maybe do the 5W-30.

But the 0W-30 is better.

5W-30 is more "standard". Yeah, go with that.

But 0W-30 is more "modern" spec. Yes, shiny and new. THATS your oil.

The 5W-30 has been around a lot longer and is proven. Changed my mind, go with this.

Maybe the shelves are full of the 0W-30 and not the 5W. Based on that, ya better get it.

But 5 is greater than zero and that translates to everything, even oil, right?

Ok, Ok, my final recommendation is the Mobil 1 ESP W-30 😁.

The part that matters in an Eco (IMO) is the 5k OC,I less the oil used. Just me but I would use Mobil 1 5-30 with a quality filter and an OCI of 5-6k. Use either of what you posted and sleep well.

Earlier today at local wm:
ESP 0W-30 was on sale for $24.xx / 5 qt.
ESP 5W-30 was $27.xx / 5 qt.

I took the pics of back of the jugs:

Here’s the full list for ESP 0w-30 from Mobil’s website. I’m currently using it in a range of domestic, euro, and asian vehicles that recommend 0w-16 and 0w-20. Oldest being a 2013 and newest a 2024 Crosstrek.

That’s a significant bump going from 0W16 to 0W30 ESP (great oil) . I’m on hiatus from 0W30 ESP while I try to clean the rings and reduce oil consumption in my Hyundai 2.4L GDI using VRP 5W30 for at least a couple of 4K mile runs.
