Mobil 1 ESP 0W30

Oh right. Yeah I don’t want a full SAPS oil either hence my question about a less expensive VW 504 00 approved oil. There aren’t any really inexpensive options anymore, the AutoZone price is the best I’ve found by quite a bit. Grade doesn’t matter to me since the approval states a minimum HT/HS.

Castrol 5W-30 C3 from Walmart online used to be another option you might have wanted but the price on that has increased a lot lately too.
Walmart online has Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 for $7.97/qt. Just bought 6 qts.

I wasn’t aware they had it. That’s not a terrible price. Not great, but not sky high either.

Not as good as getting the 0W-30 for
But the 5W-30 might hold up a bit better during the course of an OCI better than the 0W-30 (I assume it has lower VM content).

I have read here that oils with a 0W rating usually use a higher-quality base oil in order to achieve that rating. I wonder if it’s the case with ESP 0W vs. 5W.
I know this post is very old, but I just came across it. The pao and GTL content of the ESP 0w30 is significantly higher than the 5w30. Seemingly much better base oil. I run it in my car.

According to M1 website
0/30 via @100c is 12.2
5/30 is 11.9 or 12. Don’t recall

Source for your claim that PAO & GTL content of the 0W-30 is “significantly higher than the 5W-30 version”?

I’ve always thought the 5W-30 version would actually be better because it would theoretically contain fewer VM/VII.

You don't need 0w oils for your climate.
5w/10w would have been my choice for that GM 1.4.
I'll never buy another 0w30 for our Hyunkias and I had one of the 3-best sponsored here at BITOG.

Both are better shear & dilution fighters and both seem to keep the engine quieter.
I'll never buy another 0w30 for either of our Hyunkia's again.
Here the pertinent part is the approvals the ESP product provides, as well as the accompanying HT/HS. The winter rating is very much secondary in this instance. It is going to withstand fuel dilution better than any ILSAC 30-grade.

The ESP oils are an excellent value and choice for moderate/typica OEM drains. Porsche's cleanliness standard is quite a bit tougher than the API and these are stay in grade oils. Mobil 1 ESP and Valvoline European XL-III etc while meeting the mid SAPS and minimum HTHS values don't appear to contain any polar materials based on VOA. It means the 'ring' cleanliness standards required by Porsche/Audi/VW/BMW/MB/DEXOS2/ACEA C3 are obtained in LIMITING deposits, but they have little to no natural solvency. This is likely why HPL/Red Line/Torco/Amsoil Euro cost more due, to the more polar base oils they use.

The formula for the 0w-30 is different if you happen to get it mixed from their Canadian affiliate or in the us. But still significantly higher content for either than 5w30. 5w30 includes no gtl and a maximum 15% blend of the 3 major pao types. The 0w30 is a minimum 35% pao and 25% gtl depending on where it’s blended. Msds can’t give us perfect answers, but provide significant information in this case.

From other forum posts, the ESP uses POE as its grade v stock but only makes up 5-7% of the base oil. The performance brands will have significant more ester content

Okay, I see the ESP is a European formula. $27.97 at Walmart. I would have to use the AFE instead though for warranty purposes in the 2024 Mazda CX-5.

I'm looking for an oil to stick with. I grabbed a couple jugs of the Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 ($25 rebate) for now. May do a UOA after the second run. Considering switching to the AFE 0w-30 after that though. UOA may show I don't need to.
