I stopped using Mobil after finding Mobil Clean 5000 5w30 was not really available much. But there certainly was a mess of 10/30 and 10/40. I now am exclusively

Castrol GTX. At least I can find IT.

I would guess group III costs less to produce than group IV. Companies that make both price their groupl III oils less than their group IV. Both markets are pretty competitive and most companies can offer both.

Group three is cheaper to produce. That's why most synthetics out there are group three.

....and Group III's are the most popular synthetic. Don't think other high end brands won't go the Group III+ route either.

Amsoil has been very forthcoming about what they use and honest IMO. Much more so than I would have thought. However, the latest MSDS's and answer on the fAQ page about what base oils they use clearly hint at a change or openess to change in the future. "not being locked into a single base oil strategy" leaves the door wide open...

Let me ask this question, if the performance of Mobil 1 Extended Performance was as good as say GC or Amsoil, would it matter that it was a Group III? For me it would not matter.

Its not about performance, its about not decreasing prices after using a cheaper basestock. If competitors can sell a product in the same group for $7-8 dollars less and perform just as well, mobil can decrease prices too. In corporate america, showing negative profits are never a good thing, even if its going from 49 billion to 25 billion in a year. People panic, share holders dump shares and it creates a huge snowball effect. Biggest reason mobil wont ever lower prices. Nothing to do with being greedy but everything to do with economics and business in this country.

I heard (read, actually) a completely unsubstantiated rumor that Mobil 1 0W-40 was in danger of losing its VW 502.00 certification because of the reformulation. I have been using it for the past 3 years because 502.00 oils are VERY difficult to find in my area (San Diego north coast).

So Mobil 1 raised prices and switched to cheaper ingredients?

Mobil 1 surpassed Castrol Syntec. Syntec merely kept prices the same while switching to cheaper ingredients.

Couldn't major oil companies just break into our garages and steal things from us?

Are you sure it's not the 503.01 spec, since that is the harder spec to reach? Many oils have the 502 spec, only a few have the 503.01 though?
