The best personal experience I have is a 1996 3.4 Toyota sludger that never showed an issue because it ran on a strict Mobil 1 diet with a 3k to 5k OCI regimin. That thing looked and ran like new under the valve covers after about 180k miles when it was sold.
I feel the same. Keeping the engine clean is very important. I think your top tier synthetics like M1/Amsoil/ and even RL, have always done a great job at that. I would add Pennzoil PP/PUP into that mix as well. Amsoil is probably the best as they can boost up their oils a bit being they aren't tied to shareholders. Mobil 1 is a close 2nd.
The PAO grades of M1 are going to provide the highest resistance to oxidation, but as far as cleaning ability that may depend on the oils with the most AN/POE base stocks.
