Is this test done in X/hrs or X/miles? Ive never seen a thread on turbo shaft coking... also what is number of loops?

Nice!

I had posted the details of the GM dexos1 turbocharger test with pictures in this thread:

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/foru...ation-for-deposits-with-teost-33c-or-mol

Here is the data on how different types of VII, amount of antioxidant, dispersants, and amount of moly affect the turbocharger deposits. It's interesting that they didn't bother to study the effect of different types of base oil. Note that there are two measures: turbocharger coolant outside temperature (TCO temperature) percent increase and end-of-test deposit merit ratings.

The type of the VII and amount of antioxidant makes a day-and-night difference.

The new Mobil 1 Turbo Power oil (M1 TP) apparently claims 3% on the TCO test (4x better than the 13% limit). Virtually all M1 flavors are dexos1 Gen 2 certified and it's unclear if the other flavors are different in the TCO performance. Note that the Test Oil B had less than 1%, which is about 16x better than the 13% limit, outperforming the M1 TP by yet another 4x.

Thanks for sharing that Gokhan. *I noticed the Turbo oils are no longer on the Mobil product guide.

Here is an oxidation test of M1 AP vs competitive synthetics.

So, perhaps the M1 AP 5W-20 and M1 AP 5W-30 have a lot of alkylated naphthalene (AN) to achieve the oxidation stability? That would explain the price premium of the M1 AP, as AN is more expensive than PAO, although cheaper than ester (POE).

The only way to find out would be to look at the FTIR spectrum.

What about the % of AO's? I'm trying to think of what else could drive the cost up....

For the 41 years I have used M1 oils I have found their oils are all great for low coke deposit performance.

back to when there was a coke (bottle) deposit

I grew up in Arlington TX in the late 40s to 1959. I used to collect soda bottles(no cans then) for 2 cents per.

True indeed 4wd...

Mobil 1 sure has put a lot of money and research into their top level oils... It certainly has made their top level oils legitimate.

When I was a kid growing up near Chicago, a group of friends and I spent most of a summer day scrounging up pop bottles from all around the neighborhood...we found them in bushes, garbage cans, partly buried in the alley, etc.
We lived about two blocks from a grocery store (long since closed) and marched over there to collect our deposit reward...an attendant there went berserk on us, screaming that he wasn't gonna deal with a bunch of filthy random bottles that some kids dug up. You bought a six pack from the store, drank them, brought those bottles back...that was it, he wouldn't accept anything else
I'm sure there were single sales of bottles back then, I think he just didn't want to deal with cleaning the bottles and maybe there were some brands in our pile that the store didn't carry. We probably would have had better luck if we had taken a hose to the bottles and got them looking at little nicer.
That was a waste of a nice day!

It honestly looks like I'd be better off buying the "blue line" oil for probably much less money than AP and changing it 80% of the way through the test...

So what specifically have you measured to determine the parameter "great" for "low coke performance", and what did you compare it against ?

Yep. It would be good to know the scale on the bottom line of that graph.

Where the AP oil stands out is its resistance to oxidation. Wear control and deposit control is likely on par with other M1 grades and synthetics.

A scale for the number of loops would have been nice to see.
