You beat me to it. Valvoline has NOACK of 10 and 10.5 for 5W-20 and 5w30. Which is slightly better than PP. Amsoil will kick all of their butts in NOACK in any grade.

Why would they consider basic information like NOACK proprietary? All of their major competitors like Pennzoil, Valvoline, QS, Castrol, Redline, and Amsoil openly publish this information in their PDS. Complete nonsense IMO.

It's my understanding the NOACK test has to do with evaporation and thickening of the oil. If I'm wrong please correct me. Since Mobil 1 oils are more prone to shear slightly(Doug says that is better than oxidizing) Mobil 1 oils surely must do well with this test. Is this why Mobil 1 oils are know for keeping engines very clean with excellant deposit control?
 
Mobil feels this number is not important for consumers to know for purchasing motor oils. Lame, but it's true for the most part.
 
Before hearing of BITOG I never heard of such a test and I've been changing oil since 64. Us BITOGERs are a grain of sand on a beach compared to the automotive world.
 
tig, that's not the issue though. NOACK is a "somewhat" important # to look at. To meet API SM, and other specs, you have to be below 15% for NOACK volatility. Mobil 1 has always had very low volatility, so I'm not sure why they chose not to publish it.
 
I now understand the importance of the ASTM D 5800 spec, but as you said the public has no clue as was I before coming to BITOG. XM should report this spec as Castrol should.
 
It's my understanding when an oil evaporates it thickens(oxidises). When an oil oxidises that's when deposites like sludge can begin. A low volitility number is better at preventing sludge. The Honda HTO spec calls for an oil that highly resist evaporation that produce deposits. A turbo bearing killer.
Mobil 1 5w30 and PP qualify for the Honda spec. Not sure about others.
I hope I have this right and if not please correct me.

Motul doesn't show this(ASTM D 5800) as well. Or ELF.

Amsoil has NOACK data on Mobil 1 5w30 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 from their independent tests. NOACK for these 2 oils look good. To my knowledge this is the only NOACK data on their oils.

Ahhh, Tig ..but suppose the internet and BITOG were around for your 46 years of changing oil? Would we still be a spec of sand on the beach???

If ANYTHING it was something like BITOG that got the formerly published data removed. They got tired of too much non-dumb-consumer traffic on the tech lines

In all fairness Amsoil's tech line isn't all that forthcoming with unpublished data.
 
I figure NOACK can be badly distorted by a small fraction of low vapor pressure material. I would like to see a thermogravimetric analysis, showing weight against time at a temperature. I thing you could have 2 oils of similar NOACK, one would drop quickly and level off, while the other continued to drop.
 
I think the NOACK test is performed @ 250C for one hour with an air stream passing over it. Whether lower boilers or not, I think whatever can be off gassed will be off gassed.
 
I am not a big fan of Used Oil Analysis.

But with an unproven DI engine, I would send in a few samples with the oils you try.
Fuel dilution would be a concern, and something to see hard numbers about.
