Bill, I have to politely disagree with that statement. There are videos and documentation of synthetic oils running in tests for numerous miles that show next to no wear. The Mobil 1 1,000,000 KM video comes to mind as does Amsoil documentation. And I doubt you will see any professional drivers run dino.

And millions and millions of engines that run conventional oils with no next to no wear in REAL life. No made up marketing testing like the one that you referenced (do a search and find out why that test is NOT what it seems to be)

What is a professional driver? More semi trucks use conventionals over syns and they are driven by a "professional". (we may argue that some of them are not so but that is another thread)

Indy Car drivers are "professional" too. What they do and use is VERY different to what we drive.

Don't FALL for the marketing for FACT is all I'm saying. Just because you run something is NOT going to be the end all and nothing is going to happen. If something is going to break, no type of oil is going to fix it.

Agreed. I'm a synthetic fan (I admit I'm a fan and not a proponent); I hold no illusions. I've run many taxis with a combined fleet mileage well into the millions. All QS conventional, all 6,000 mile OCIs. No lube related failures. The engines outlasted the rest of the vehicle, without exception. What else could I ask for from my oil? What advantage would synthetic have given me in that application?

I'll tell you why I'm going with Mobil EP and not Mobil AFE 0W-30. I'm lazy and I hate changing my oil. And so I'm going to changing it once a year since I only put around 8,000 on the two vehicles. This is the only oil that I regularly find at Wal-mart that I would trust such a task.

With out knowing what your vehicles are or how they are driven its hard to say that your plan is good or not.

But 8000 miles I'd just use the normal Mobil 1 if you like that brand. Or PP, Or QS syn if you need a syn.

I will continue to use regular Mobil 1 as I have for nearly 33 years, but have used PP on occasion with equal results.

Wow! 33 years. You must have used the 5-20 varity as I did in 78. Been with M1 ever since.

I think I first used the 5W/30, but it's been so long. I do remember the nice round bottles from the 80's that were so much nicer than what we have now. Good to hear from a fellow long time M1 user!

Cheers!

Personally, I think the super-shiny cans M1 was packaged in in the 1970's/early 1980's were the coolest-looking oil cans ever!

I agree with you on the warranty thing. My friend brought his 03 Windstar over this morning to do a brake job. I also, as a favor to him, often change his engine and tranny oil as he does things for me. Anyway he is doing 15K OCI with M1 5-30EP(118K on the engine) and I noticed his engine is very quite, clean, and smooth for the Ford 3.8 V6. I'm just doing 10-11K with EP but may step that up some more as the oil looks great even with 11K as my last OC was 3 weeks ago.

Tig....

The way an oil looks is REALLY not a good way to tell how an oil is performing. But if I was using Mobil 1 EP it would be only for 15k OCIs.

Sadly, one of my engines can not do extended OCIs even with 95% highway use.

We need a picture of the 68 Roadrunner and a picture of that big 426 Hemi.

Neat, neat, neat cars. My next door neighbor had a new one in 68 and boy was that thing fun to cruise in. I think you could actually see the gas gauge move when those two fours kicked in. Oh, what a beautiful sound it made.

That's almost an exact quote from Hot Rod magazine when they tested one.

I first used M1 in 78 in a 78 Dodge slant 6. If I listed all the cars and pick ups I have used M1 in it would be quite a list.
