But your wallet likely took a pounding; paying for a premium syn and running it at 5k miles is a total waste. I don't care how much you saved on the car, or how long you intend to keep it, or if you got the oil for free from your neighbor, etc. You way underutilized that lube.

The UOA results you got were so "average" it's silly. That's not a bad thing for the engine. But it shows that the syn did absolutely ZERO in terms of performance over what any dino will do in the same circumstances.

Congrats on a great buy on a nice car.

Oh I don't know Dave. Artem is apparently a guy who just beats his engine to death. Isn't there there an advantage for Synthetic under those extreme conditions? He got it cheap so he's a little casual about draining it fast. That's just human nature.

It does seem to me that more of us should sample first, then drain. Many times we could mitigate the cost of the UOA by extending a couple more thousand miles without coming close to a true condemnation level.

I do exactly that while slowly extending the OCIs but in this case, with this being the first oil change, I wanted to dump the used oil to help flush whatever leftovers from the previously used unknown oil were left behind. In this case, the sodium is not from Mobil 1, so it's obviously from the previous oil that was used...

I hear you, and I'm sorry to clutter up your thread with my comments. Dave does get under my skin, and I think there are others around here who feel the same way. His assumption that long drain intervals are the only reason to use synthetic oil are particularly annoying to me.

I think if he just toned it down a bit, we'd get more people posting UOAs. IMO, the primary purpose of this forum is to serve as a repository for UOA reports which help others select an appropriate oil for their application. I haven't posted the UOA history for my dad's 2010 Outback here in part because I don't want to beat back the comments of Dave and the rest of the ROI mafia.

I'm doing a couple UOA'a before & after LubeGard, but I'll be darned if I ever post another UOA here again after how he treated me. Nope, no way.

Oh waaaaaa. I won't post because someone on a forum chastised me. Hilarious.
Sorry for polluting your thread Artem. Congrats on the new ride

Really? Is it a "waaaaaa" or is it "wisdom"?

Here's an analogy:

You walk down a road and a person stabs you.
You walk down a road and a person stabs you again.
Someone else walks down the same road and a person stabs him.
Someone else walks down the same road and a person stabs him too.
Someone else walks down the same road and a person stabs him too.
Someone else walks down the same road and a person stabs him too.

On and on. Over and over. It never stops.

So, you really think I/the ones who learned their lesson should be walking down that same road? Again?

Really? I learned my lesson.

Now, back to Artem's UOA.

Can you PM me your results? Thanks.

Absolutely. Think I'll be sending them to several.

I was all over Amsoil when I could get it for the same price as regular off the shelf lubes. Might as well use the boutique stuff, right?

Now when I hit it big with Kmart's clearance sales as well as a dozen or more FAR deals and debates, purchasing Amsoil when I have 300+ quarts of various brands of oils for $1 a quart just doesn't make any sense.

I still use their Transmission fluids and even Coolant but you won't be seeing any UOA of that lube from me. I don't do UOA on anything but engine oil.

I've got a ton of Castrol Edge, Valvoline, G-Oil, etc that I plan on using once the last few gallons of M1 is gone. With my plans to extend the OCIs, that won't be any time soon, but that's the plan.

Sorry Amsoil... If they offered sales every so often, I'd be all over it.

Careful with the 10k ocis with this vehicle. My last 10k oci, the viscocity was pretty beat up with the 0w-30. I've resigned myself to 5-7k ocis.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on the viscosity as I inch my way towards a longer OCI. The car sees lots of highway miles, so i don't expect it to be THAT hard on oil.

Were you using Mobil 1's 0w30?

Did you post the UOA? The last I found was 8.6k in your Tundra and it stayed in grade (9.7 cSt). I count any RC Xw30 that stays in grade as pretty good in the viscosity department. My father has been using M1 0w30 for 8-10k in his Subaru Outback 3.6R with good results and stable viscosity, the Subie EZ36 H6 has timing chains too.

I'm just wondering, not many are running M1 AFE 0w30 around here.

I also attempted to search for the UOA but couldn't find any thread on it. Perhaps it was never posted and he's just keeping it to himself.

Post it!
