My bad, we don't have Castrol Edge here. I was thinking of the US Syntec which has shown very good wear numbers but NOT extended drain capability. Look for yourself.

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for your enquiry to Castrol Technical.

There are a number of Edge Grades that have been recently released, including Edge 0W/40, Edge Sport 5W/30, Edge Sport 25W/50 and Edge Sport 10W/60. These grades use a range of base stocks, for example, Edge 0W/40 uses PAO, Edge Sport 5W/30 uses Group III, Edge Sport 25W/50 uses Group I.

Castrol Technical.

From my gatherings, EDGE is no better than their Formula R range as nothing has changed at all in the data sheets! Not even OEM certs or viscocities etc.

If Castrol is so bad why would BMW do 15,000 mile drain intervals with it? Why would VW use it in their turbo'd engines? Ive seen posts on here that there is more valve train wear with Mobil 1, but most seem to agree that this is the holy grail of oils. Why is that? They are all over priced, but that doenst stop anyone from buying them does it.

Some people are stat whores. If it's group III syn it's way overpriced for what it is. Even though it seems all the popular group III's are all the same price or maybe .25 difference. Castrol gets slammed all the time but q power, synpower and havoline never get mentioned. Mobil1 seems to be jumping up in .50 cent increments every couple of weeks while others go up a few cents or not at all. There are many great syns out there that don't get used by people who discover this site and hear all the group III crap.

Well actually here in Australia their oils are appropriately priced. Their Group III is inline with others (Shell Helix Ultra etc) and their PAO is priced like Mobil 1.

Yes I wasnt implying Group III is no good just if they were similarly priced I'd go PAO everytime. But then I have a turbo and I'm biased towards Group IV/V oils because of that.

Thats why I will start getting the wally world syn 53-30 at about 12 bucks for a 5 quart jug...I change it every 3,000 miles anyway.
