Mobil 1 0w-40 vs GC 0w-30

What does the manufacturer list for oil grades and types, also what is the operating temp range and general condition of the engine like?
If you are talking about the classic Pontiac engine, then I would contact the forum concerned and the oil company you like directly, if the manufacturer does not list sensible recommendations. Both Mobil 0/40 and GC are not real race oils, so you may be looking at an oil that is more shear stable and contains a lot of anti wear additivers rather than detergents.

500 N/A horsepower or forced induction?

Assuming you are N/A means you have an agressive cam and springs which means some added zinc won't hurt. In this case I would try the Mobil 1 0w40 or T6.

Assuming forced induction we would need to know what type as a turbo will share the oil supply with the engine and a supercharger is more than likely a sealed unit.

Nice car! I loved those, wish they had sold them here maybe I would see more around.

I don't think either of those would be a bad choice. Myself I would likely try the GC just because it is slightly lighter than the M1 but still heavier than what GM spec'd. 100HP is not up into the range that you should need to be too concerned about what you put in there.

skyship - classic Pontiac engine? The 455? That is 7.5 liters....

Assuming only mild mods to the already 400HP stock engine Mobil 1 0w40 is my choice.
The engine is spec OEM for 5w30 Dexos 1.

The LS2 uses roller lifters so zinc doesn't play much of a role but the 0w40 has enough anyway with IIRC around 1100 PPM.
The 0w40 seems to handle fuel dilution well, it holds up well in old air cooled turbo boxer engines as well as more modern tuned GT2 engines making over 500HP which are notoriously hard on oil.

The fact Mobil 1 0w40 meets Nissan GT-R and Porsche A40 specs is IMHO a pretty good indicator of its qualities.

Hijacking and trolling as usual. Truth is you wouldn't know an LS2 if it fell out of the sky and hit you in the head, so why troll the thread with this tripe?

My goat is currently happy with the 0w-40. I only put that in because I was planning on spraying a 75 shot through the blower. I really think you can get away with a 5w30 if you had to. I've tracked mine on Mobil 1 5w30 with no obvious ill effects.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is used by GM in this family of engines for track use FWIW. This was posted by another member a short while back and found it quite interesting.

I have run the Mobil 1 0w-40 in my car at many HPDE's including an all day affair at Homestead where I saw oil temps VERY close to 300 degrees.

No degradation at all per Blackstone OA's.

It's a mighty fine choice and was the original spec for my 6.1 liter Hemi.

Either would be good. I run what is cheaper between the two for the current sales at the time. If they are the same price, I'd go with Mobil 1. I do still run Mobil 1 5w30 from time to time in my LS1 GTO, but it still has stock internals and I have added an oil pressure gauge to keep my eye on conditions for long periods of aggressive driving. If you have not added a gauge yet, I highly recommend it. It takes a drop below 6psi to turn on the GTO's oil pressure light.

I believe the Castrol has shown itself to be much more shear resistant, but then again it starts out at a lower viscosity so it's probably a draw anyway.

Mobil 1 0w40 because you can probably get it at Walmart for ~$6/qt everyday, and GC rarely goes on sale anywhere. But Mobil 1 5w30 would work fine, too. It's factory fill on 505HP LS7's.

Sure it does. AAP had a BOGO sale on it just recently. It's often on special at AZ as well.

Thanks for the advice guys. The car has a fairly aggressive cam in it with dual 650 lift valvesprings. I was also thinking of running redline 5w-20. Any thoughts?

Why 5w-20? I know that their HTHS is high for each grade but I would still use the 5w30. Not much reason to go heavier than that with their offerings though. I have thought of trying Redline myself.

Good point Mr Harman

Spunkship thought an LS2 was a Pontiac engine--?--that really shows how deep the knowledge level is
