One of the members on www.mercurymaurader.net posted this on that forum. He gave me permission to post it over here for all to see. This was his first UOA. He added 1 quart of makeup oil (half a quart at a time) during the UOA.

He mentioned that most of his driving consists of short trips.

Sorry guys, I didn't realize it would be so small. If someone knows how to blow it up a bit larger and repost it, feel free.

Thanks.

I fixed it, see below.

This guys problems are numerous, but the biggest problem looks like he's ingesting lots of dirty air while running an extended OCI. The short trips probably didn't help either. The grade of oil had nothing to do with this guy's problems.

That's one unhappy engine. Maybe the silicon of 41 ppm is scratching the heck out of it's internals...assuming it's dirt and not sealant.

How long was the oil in the car? How long between complete warm up of the oil to remove water, ect? Lots of questions unanswered.

You're basically sand blasting this engine. Check the air filter quick!

I highly doubt that the oil is responsible for this mess of a UOA. I'm sure if Terry Dyson looked over this report he would find some sort of major mechanical explanation for the high wear. I don't think any oil in the world would make up for it. The mechanical problem needs to be solved first.

Iron 193ppm, Silicon 41ppm,Nickle 3 ppm this engine is in serious trouble if this is allowed to continue. He is running rich and needs to fix this and any air leaks. He also needs to reduce his oil change interval. I am no fan of 0W20. If he trys the same viscosity again make sure he samples at 5000 miles so we can see a bit sooner what is going on.Seeing how lead and tin are so low I have a hard time with this being only a matter of silicon!I think it is a matter of low viscosity mixed with fuel dilotion and possably a mechanical problem in the makeing. He should consider paying Terry for a reading!

Does this engine have a tic, slap or knock? I am asking becasue I am thinking he might have a bad wristpin. Has he complained of any past or present detonation issues?

Wow, extending the OCI under warranty without establishing a base reading at about 5K miles? TBN held up well considering, but NOT the way I would have done it....

FYI:

He stated that this was the original air filter. I'm assuming he means it's the one that came on the car from the factory. He said he could not find any noticeable air leaks, but he admitted that he wasn't certain what he should be looking for in particular.

He also mentioned that the duration of this OCI was about 22 or 23 months, so it looks like he's only putting about 500 miles per month on his car.

I, too, am curious how folks can tell he's running rich.
