Would you guys recommend using MMO on a 3.8li 997 Porsche? With only 9k and just performed it's second oil change, I am surprised to see the oil so dirty. (M1 0W-40).

Thanks!

Geez, I would probably run super short 1k maybe? intervals until the oil cleans up. That's a great motor, one you shouldn't have many issues with. I owned a 2006 Carrera S that was absolutely wonderful.

PS: This is just my opinion. I don't know much compared to everyone else here.

Only 9000 miles on the car? If so, I would continue using the M1 0W40. It is w/o a doubt one of the very best oils made by Mobil and held in very high regard here on Bitog. Oil gets dirty that's part of what happens to oil in any engine, and considered normal. Dirty looking oil doesn't mean the engine is dirty or the oil is bad. If you do feel the absolute need to add MMO, add a pint 1000 miles before you plan on changing the oil. Otherwise leave well enough alone. JMO

You can also send a sample of the oil for analysis and a lab can tell you how the oil is holding up in your application. They can tell if fuel or coolant is contaminating it, as well as other data that might be useful.

Remember that this is a dry sump engine and probably takes ~13 qt of oil (maybe more). Sure, the OP is probably a person of means driving a relatively new 997 but that's still a pretty hefty chunk of change, especially if he doesn't DIY. There's also multiple oil filters and an oil change "process" that takes longer than on a wet sump engine.

To the OP: M1 0W40 is a pretty great oil and just because it's black doesn't mean anything is wrong. The fact that it's black means that "bad things" are in the oil instead of deposited inside the engine. If you have no reason to believe that there are any deposits in your engine then, IMO, just keep with it. Change the oil at least once per year and maybe shorten your OCI by 1k miles (not shorten it TO 1k miles) and see if it makes you more comfortable.

Also make sure that you're "blowing the dust out" of that engine on a regular basis once it's fully warmed up. Don't just 'blub blub blub' down to the grocery store and back.

I agree with person above. No...

The Porsche manual states 15k. Just so I don't drive myself insane, I go at half that. Especially since the turbo burns oil every 1.5k miles and need to add a quart. I never put any additives to the car and just drive it like it should be driven.

Just stick with OEM Filter and a good Synthetic oil. As someone stated, its running off a dry sump so it holds a 9+ quarts of oil. Its going to turn black. There's just something with these motors that will turn oil black as soon as you drive 100 miles. If you're really concerned, do a UOA but I wouldn't see the need to add anything to the motor. Especially since yours is brand new.

So far I have been changing the oil around every 5k miles. Maybe I will add a little bit of MMO next time prior to the OCI, but I agree the engine is great!

This is normal and I wouldn't worry about it...Black oil means it is doing the job it is supposed to do...BTW, the 997 3.8 is not a dry sump unless it is the motor in a Porsche GT3 997...the standard Carrera uses a different engine block that they call an "integrated dry sump"...it's really just a large cavity around the oil pick up and has a large capacity, 10 quarts I believe. I'd keep using the M1 and change it at 5-7000 miles...IMHO the 15 K OCI is a tad too long...although there are some UOA's that support it!

I'd use MMO on any engine. Toss in a quart and keep driving.

I wouldn't take it to the track as viscosity is low for MMO and will drop a 40wt into a 30wt easily, meaning you don't want to push the oil temp too high.

Mobil1 0w40 is a great oil. Royalpurple, Redline... also have 0w40 if you want to see how well another oil does.

15k isn't too high when you have a large sump. But, the OP's vehicle is on its 2nd oil change with 9k. Nothing to worry about unless you aren't topping off for excessive consumption, if any.

If you really want oil that is amber clear&clean, you need to install a bypass filter. A roll of toilet paper will keep the oil visually clear just like it came out of the bottle.

Hi,
fastsvo - There is NO NEED to use MMO or any other additive if you are using an Approved lubricant - and you are - M1 0W-40

This is especially so in Porsche engines!!

Firstly, how do you know it's "dirty" - have you udertaken a UOA?

Secondly, colour is perhaps one the most misunderstood parts of "amateur" lubricant analysis and lubrication systems in general

Much as I think MMO is a great product, I wouldn't use it on a Porshe that already calls for a high-quality syn oil that will keep it clean.

M1 0W-40 is not going to leave anything behind that MMO will clean up, especially with low miles. If you're really bothered by oil colour and perceived 'dirtyness', just change it more often. If you can afford a Porshe, a few more changes of M1 won't break the bank!
