Pretty much. It carries more approvals for high performance applications than any oil on the market. ALL current gasoline-powered Porsches and Mercedes-Benzes use it, and all gas-powered cars from Audi and BMW can use it as well. This includes everything from the entry-level commuters to the twin-turbo sports cars. It's one product that you can count on the manufacturer to get right. None of this necessarily makes it "the best;" it just makes it the surest bet for a lot of applications.
As Quattro Pete said, all you need to look for for your car is BMW LL-01 approval, which a few oils carry (including BMW's own 5w30, even though it doesn't mention that approval explicitly). All products with that approval should perform about the same in your engine. However, if it makes you sleep better to use something a bit more glamorous, then have at it.
