Is it OK to mix 4 quarts of 10w30 and 4 quarts of 20w-50 to make 8 quarts of 15w40. The oil is Schaeffer's supreme 7000 and will be going in a 1999 6.5 diesel H1 hummer.

While the viscosity would be approximately correct, the detergent, dispersant and antiwear levels would likely be wrong. Diesels need a different additive package than a gasoline engine oil.

I concur. Schaeffer has some diesel-rated oils that would be perfect for an H1 and the "diesel" distinction is an important one. That said, mixing oils is done most safely using oils that use similar chemistry, so the basic mixing part of your question is correct... just do it with diesel rated oils if you insist upon doing it.

Just run 15W40 diesel oil...it's cheap and available everywhere.

I think you'd be fine. Run it 3/4 short of usual. The 20-50 has enough zddp to pick up the dif from the other, visc will be good.

Bad idea.

1--you can not calculate the resulting viscosity of mixed multi-vis oils. The mixture must be tested to find out exactly what you have.

2--You will not end up with an oil suitable for a diesel engine (well, maybe a small light duty diesel). There is much more to diesel-rated engine oil than just the viscosity and the zinc content.

Why take the chance of not having enough ZDDP with a witches brew when legit 15W40 diesel oil is dirt cheap? Less than $10 a gallon at Walmart for dino Mobil or Delo.

Delvac is going for $9.50/gal at Walmart around here. Why not just use a proper diesel rated oil. If it were a gasser, I'd say who cares but as others have said the diesel oil is a whole different animal in terms of what its ment to handle.

+1 that is an expensive engine to be experimenting on.
