Hi gang: Due to issues that unfortunately got in the way of life last year, I missed doing my regular oil change on 95 Nissan Maxima. I did an oil change today and saw that the last time I did the filter/oil change was Jan 2016. The car is garaged and only had 3k miles since the last change. I have used Mobil 1 regular synthetic (not the extended interval one) 5W-30 since 1995. I always use Nissan OEM filters. The oil was dark, but not black, and flowed out of the drain OK. My manual specifies 3750 miles/3 months for severe service and 7500 miles/6 months for non-severe service. In general, I have done the changes at about 5-6 months regardless of mileage. Should I run the car another 1k miles now or so and change it out again or let it go my usual full 5-6 months and get back on schedule.

Corrective Actions prevent the problem from recurring. Corrections are what you are looking at to fix the immediate problem.

Quality Semantics.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just run it like normal.

Thanks all for all the quick responses! Never let it go that long, and knew it had been a while, but would have gambled it was OK. Thanks for confirming! I like kohnen's idea of penance

PS... I have been using the regular Super Synthetic Mobil 1 version and just read on their site about their synthetic Annual Protection and Extended Performance oils that can be changed every year. So is their regular product really good for a year plus OCI? Should I consider switching to one of the other annual oil products?

Lol, so marketing DOES work!

To put is simply, [censored] NO!

OP, 3K miles with regular M1 5W30, even in ~ 15 months is not a problem.

I would stick to the regular M1 and Nissan OEM filters and change every 7500 miles / 12 months. Any sooner and you are wasting good M1. To be honest, you are doing such small distance, I would consider a 18 month OCI.

No need for the AP, regular M1 can do 12 months.

Agree with SR5. Also, oil looking dark/black/whatever on the dip stick means nothing (maybe milky white or rainbow coloured and I'd be worried). I've seen quite a number of threads here with people commenting about changing the oil once it looked dark. Research more here, keep learning

Priced too high now - AP's supposed to have a heavy dose of PAO - so meant for long runs - not what you are doing.

Changed too soon - w M1, change every 6000 miles or 5 years - whichever comes first. Keep it topped off and you'll be fine.
