Mike Lange passed away.

I'm a lifelong Pittsburgher and grew up listening to Mike Lange call the games on the radio. When the Pens won the Cup in 2009 I was 12 years old, and became a dedicated hockey fan. The old 29er does a good job calling the games now, but no one could ever truly replace Mike Lange's announcing.

It's quite possible I heard Mr Lange call a game back in the day. During the playoffs, Hockey Night In Canada would often cut over between periods to a different game. "And now we go to Pittsburgh, to the Penguins-Caps game already in progress."

I particularly enjoyed the feeds from St Louis with the iconic Dan Kelly.

The original Winnipeg Jets (1972/73 - 1978/79 in the WHA, and 1979/80 - 1995/96 in the NHL) moved to Phoenix in 1996 (and for this season from Phoenix to Utah).

The Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg in 2011. I'm still bitter that the owners did not rehire the original voice of the Jets, Curt Keilback. He was excellent.

He had a very distinctive, not quite raspy, but somewhat coarse voice. And lots of "Lange-isms"... might have to buy one of these posters with all the different ones on it now.

This all reminds of a hockey sign from a long time ago:

It was in the late-'80s. The Penguins, coached by Pierre Creamer, and with Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey on the ice, were becoming serious Stanley Cup contenders.

A clever fan in the stands held up a sign, thus:

WE'VE GOT THE COFFEE

WE'VE GOT THE CREAMER

NOW WE WANT THE CUP!

and in the early 90's they were blessed with 2 and 2 more in the mid 2010's.

Greatest sport on earth IMO. Those who say otherwise probably don't understand the game.

Just my $0.02

I am glad I got to hear him on the radio and see him on tv. He truly was a part of Pittsburgh. He will be missed. Eddie Olczyk was in tears yesterday talking about Lange on radio show.
