Here is an Email that I just sent off to Midas Corporate. I kind of blame myself for suggesting Midas to my son in the first place but it was a good learning experience for him (and refresher for myself)
My son recieved an estimate for exhaust work at the above outlet. The only repair needed was to replace the flex pipe off the manifold. (I performed an inspection of the exhaust just prior to the estimate). The written estimate provided listed the Converter as "A reqd-No longer performs function" $134.96 for labor and 449.99 for parts. Considering that the exhaust system at the time of inspection was completely seperated from the exhaust manifold on the engine, I dont possibly see how a determination of its functionality could be performed, as it would be impossible to have performed an emissions test at that time. Also, listed on the estimate was a charge for replacement of the air filter listed as "B Reqd-Does not meet specifications" I am assuming that the shop performed a DP test of the filter and found it to be outside Mfg values with traceable test standards? (the filter has about 10,000 miles on it). The total charge for repairs was estimated at 702.15. I contacted "Dave" at the Midas shop and after a short discussion we both agreed that only a new "flex pipe" was needed (he was no longer talking to some clueless VICTIM). The new estimate (phone) would have been ~$350.00 parts/labor. "as this is still quite labor intensive". Needless to say the vehicle in question is currently being repaired at a local PRO shop for a total charge of $135.00! Its a shame when businesses attempt to take total advantage of customers. I'm suprised that the "muffler bearings" didnt need to be replaced. Trust the Midas Touch (right).
I'm certainly not trying to imply that ALL Midas service centers are like this. Just beware.
