Here is an Email that I just sent off to Midas Corporate. I kind of blame myself for suggesting Midas to my son in the first place but it was a good learning experience for him (and refresher for myself)

My son recieved an estimate for exhaust work at the above outlet. The only repair needed was to replace the flex pipe off the manifold. (I performed an inspection of the exhaust just prior to the estimate). The written estimate provided listed the Converter as "A reqd-No longer performs function" $134.96 for labor and 449.99 for parts. Considering that the exhaust system at the time of inspection was completely seperated from the exhaust manifold on the engine, I dont possibly see how a determination of its functionality could be performed, as it would be impossible to have performed an emissions test at that time. Also, listed on the estimate was a charge for replacement of the air filter listed as "B Reqd-Does not meet specifications" I am assuming that the shop performed a DP test of the filter and found it to be outside Mfg values with traceable test standards? (the filter has about 10,000 miles on it). The total charge for repairs was estimated at 702.15. I contacted "Dave" at the Midas shop and after a short discussion we both agreed that only a new "flex pipe" was needed (he was no longer talking to some clueless VICTIM). The new estimate (phone) would have been ~$350.00 parts/labor. "as this is still quite labor intensive". Needless to say the vehicle in question is currently being repaired at a local PRO shop for a total charge of $135.00! Its a shame when businesses attempt to take total advantage of customers. I'm suprised that the "muffler bearings" didnt need to be replaced. Trust the Midas Touch (right).

I'm certainly not trying to imply that ALL Midas service centers are like this. Just beware.

Pathetic. Why would anyone even work at a place like that?

For someone that isn't knowledgeable about work, or even goods, they're paying for, 3 quotes is a must.

Nice to see that you were able to get it fixed for such a lower amount.

Its ridiculous on how a lot of business's will screw you like that.
but in the end are only screwing themselves.

Reminds me of the time my mother took her car in to a local schumk to get the oil changed, and got a bill for $600.00 because it needed brakes, transmission pan gasket and ball joint,Lucky my brother seen the bill before she paid it and went the garage and tore a huge strip off the guy for trying to gouge ma who is on a fixed income, ended up paying for the oil change only and being threatened to take my mother to court without a written work order .After 3 years we haven,t been to court yet and my brother and I do all the maintence on ma,s car now

Yup that pretty much describes how my midas encounter was about 4 yrs back. I was totally ripped a new one for a new muffler. I feel that all their places act the same and will never go back. Buyer Beware!!!

Several years ago I had made an appointment with a dealership for some warranty work. I took the vehicle in on a Friday and they had to order a part. They set up another date, while there I noticed a tire rotation special. I asked if they would do it when I came back the following week to have my part installed. No problem.

Over the weekend I had marked the tires, in a spot on the inside of the tire that was not easily noticed. I picked up the car at night, checked the following morning and noticed they didn't rotate the tires. I called and asked if the tires were rotated and was told yes it was on the work order. I then asked the service writer to ask the tech if he did the rotation (give them the benefit of the doubt maybe he forgot)! He swore he rotated the tires. Since there were no signs of wear, or scuffs I guess they figured it was easy enough not to do. The fact that I had about 6,000 miles on it they probably figured they couldn't sell me brakes so there was no profit in the $10 rotation.

When I told him the tires were marked, he told me to come in for a tire rotation. I asked for a refund. Not everyone can be trusted! Needless to say that tire rotation cost them my future business, and I will never buy another car from them. Bad move!

Yeap, Went in for oil change and tire rotation. The tires were not rotated because I marked my tires to know whether it were rotated or not. I don't know if the oil was change. This was from Midas in Marlborough, MA.

Fortunatly the Midas shop I "frequent" (Only when required) is very honest with me. I had a friend work there for 8 years, and they know I'm not stupid when it comes to cars.

The other Midas, across town, is a different story however

As far as shops and mechanics goes, the name on the sign dosen't seem to matter. It's a crapshoot.
