I on the other hand don't have a vacuum because my staff use the services of a cleaning company and my personal chef is happy with the commercial kitchen I had installed.

The GE microwave that came with my home when it was built in 1995 still works fine. 1 year out of a microwave is garbage.

I have a Miele vacuum and have worked on them in the past. Miele has a reputation for making their own components. For instance, most vacuum manufacturers use cheap Lamb motors, even for high priced models. However, Miele makes their own to their own personal specs.

You cannot go wrong with any Miele appliance. They are one of the few companies that makes products worthy of their premium price. I can't wait for my GE dishwasher to die so I can get a Miele.

I have a nagging feeling that Panasonic was NOT cheap chinese and Overkill had done similar research before purchasing it.

Be a pest to Panasonic corporate and get it fixed gratis.

You could purchase the most expensive unit you could but if you are not willing to make sure manufacturer stands behind the product, why are you wasting your money?

My buddy just had the exact same thing happen two weeks ago, less than a year old. He bought it at the Brick, fortunately, and they just exchanged it on the spot.

As for how good the expensive one you're looking at is, I'm not sure. As long as it heats a can of Beefaroni, I'm happy with it.

I would first try to get a new panasonic one for free, we have a panasonic inverter one that has worked well for maybe 6 years now, and at work we have the same one which has also been there for 6 years. And my wife was put in charge of getting a microwave for her work and she got the same one and its been going for 4 years now.
I think you just got a dud, or one of your kids made their own lightning show with a fork in there.

I have a cheap $8 Chefmate (Target) microwave that I got on clearance a few years ago.

Waiting for it to die so I can replace it with something a bit higher in wattage.

Agreed. Try to get Panasonic to take care of you first. Our Panny inverter has now been going strong for nearly 15 years.

If you want to spend a ridiculous sum of money on what is basically a disposable household appliance, just buy a commercial grade, restaurant or convenience store, microwave oven or ( far, far, better ) a TurboChef oven.

They're U.S. made, the TurboChefs are made down in Dallas and beat any microwave like a full house beats two of a kind. http://www.turbochef.com/

Or just go get an original Amana RadarRange. Most of these were commercial quality (by today's standards). Ours is thirty years old, repair free, and would crush that Miele like a brick on a grape.

As you can tell, I'm underwhelmed by overpriced German appliances.

All of those things appear to be physically massive. My kitchen isn't.

The Turbo Chefs?

Volume wise, not really, the smaller ones are not too large for residential use.

They're heavy though, and need 230 @ 30A.

I am still using a made in USA Tappan microwave oven that I bought in 1989. My GF has the exact same microwave, except hers was made in 1988.

I would not bet the farm on it. Sadly, even a lot of the commercial grade stuff is no longer domestically made.

I bought a new Manitowoc (sp?) ice maker a few months ago and the darn thing was made in Italy. Something is seriously wrong when a huge machine (volume wise, and somewhat heavy) can be made and shipped in from Italy cheaper than it can be from Wisconsin.
