Microsoft driving me crazy!

Optional updates are not security updates. They are typically feature enhancements or new versions of programs.

The only category I use with caution is driver updates. All the others I get.

You are correct--I should've been clear about that. I do the Important & Recommended but NOT the Optional updates...and I definitely don't do any driver updates through Windows Update. If I need a driver update, I go back to the source.

Some of the branded drivers are OK. Like HP ones for HP products, the ASUS ATK drivers, and even some Lenovo ones. Then there are others I wouldn't touch with a 10ft pole.

Alotta people still use XP at home plus alot of large companies still use XP.It's reliable,period. When updates stop for XP,then we'll see more people / companies upgrade,but with this economy,you wont see everyone tryin to keep up with the joneses.


Count me as someone "stuck" in XP.

No auto updates for me on this laptop nor my desktop and both function without problems. So does the 10 year old Gateway machine (XP) that my 12 year old son uses.

I feel the OP's pain when it comes to updates for Microsoft.

Why wouldn't you install the security updates?

I guess I don't install them because I have never had a problem since I stopped using products like McAfee, Norton and Zone Alarm. Plus, there just a few sites I visit that have proven to be safe and Cableone does a great job of blocking spam mail and viruses.
Avast is great about warning me of potential problems with sites and even if it throws up a false warning, I still don't visit the site.

Maybe I'm just lucky but I feel the OP's pain in that they take so dang long to install.

Plus, I have found that installing some updates have really hindered this laptop to the point of making it useless.

I'll take my chances.
