Hey, guys. I changed the oil on a 2000 Infiniti QX4 today and they had installed a MicroGuard p/n 7317(I believe MCG is included before the numbers)...this person came with an STP oil filter but wants to do 5k mile intervals so I recommended changing out the STP for the larger size like the MG. It is a Fram filter, right? The store we exchanged at only had Mobil1 and K&N for the larger size, so I got a Mobil1 110 instead.

Does anyone know how the MicroGuard filters perform? Similar to an Xtended Guard? I would post pics but I don't have tools for cutting open the oil filter.

Aren't those the filters (MicroGuard) from O'Reiley's?

If so, they used to be made by Purolator but are now made in China and not nearly as nice as they used to be.

The reason I mentioned Fram was because I saw it on the list of oil filter 'compatible' with the car I pulled the MCG7317 from, and one was the Xtended Guard has pn/ XG7317, so I find it strange another company uses the same number for their aftermarket parts?

Walmart supertech uses the same numbers as frahms but they aren't frahms. Infer it any number of ways, convienent to cross reference if you DON'T want a frahm, or some will end up buying a frahm thinking its better than some other model they aren't familiar with using the same numbers.

The Mobil 1 1EP filter is overkill for a 5000 mile OCI...But...since you have it on...leave it on (don't change the filter) for your next oil change.

The M1 is a great long OCI filter...and can easily do 10K to 15K.

I'm sure it can, but this person makes the decisions. I'll mention it to them, but I doubt they will choose to keep the oil filter on for another change, since they don't use me to change it all of the time.

Do you really want to use cheapo filters on a nice car like that?

It wasn't my choice. I got them to exchange an STP they brought me for a Mobil1 EP filter instead. I didn't put the MicroGuard on there.

I have a feeling after pointing out several things to this person today, that I will be the only one the change the oil on this vehicle from now on.
