2016 Mazda 6, 82,000 miles total, 3600 miles on this oil change interval. No ABDV, and the filter cartridge is fairly small. The louvers are all open but they are quite small. I replaced it with a Pentius 6607 size but based on cutting open this filter I’m moving up to a larger 7317 at the next change.

I also replaced the drain plug with a Votex drain valve to make changes a little easier.

In a filter that small, the anti drainback is often skipped because the the oil pump can build pressure quickly even with the drainback, which may or may not even be occurring, depending on how the filter sits in situ on the engine.

The almost complete elimination of drainback is one advantage to the vertical-up orientation for oil filters, and it's no small reason that all Cummins oil filters are vertical with the opening at the top.

Mazda OEM filter does not have an anti-drainback valve, so, I imagine, they're just copying the OEM filter. I agree, they're small, but shouldn't pose any issue. They have been running these a long time.

The filter might not drain in that orientation, but it's possible some oil galleries above the filter could depending on engine design.

As noted, many Mazda factory and OEM replacement filters have no adbv, going to 'speculate' that the case here. If so, Wix just matching the OEM here. Fram has done similar with PH/TG 9837 for GM, matching the OE filter. That said, other manufacturers may include an adbv on equivalent application which hurts nothing. What I can see of topic filter, looks fine.

Thanks for c&p.

It’s base up in this particular engine. I was surprised the valve wasn’t there because I was making an assumption that Wix probably specs this filter for a lot of other engines besides the 2.5 Skyactiv. The 6607 equivalent is a fairly common size.

The last iteration of the Yaris was a rebadged Mazda2. The exact year they switched depends on whether it was the sedan or hatchback.
That's a pretty short oil filter application list when it comes to oil filters. Pretty specific family of engines from the looks of the list.

Indeed. That list is just basically all Skyactiv engines except for one oddball Renault.

I would buy a factory Mazda and cut it open to compare were it not for the fact I already have 11 more of the Pentius filters and probably nearly as many Purolators for that engine.

here is an oem mazda 1WPE-14-302 cut open which is the equivalent to the 57002

Doesn't look to have any kind of gasket/seal between the base plate and end cap ... the area that a rubber ADBV would normally seal. So just a metal-to-metal "seal".
For various Toyota’s, this from our RAV4, Wix 57145
