Microgard MGL3980 Cut Open - Large Pics

This is from my cousins GMC 4.3L. I used the hammer/screwdriver method. I'm assuming he used Castrol 10W30, possibly a half quart of LOS (I know..). Mileage and duration unknown, but guessing about 5k and 2 years. He doesn't care about the vehicle. Oh well, enjoy!

There is no tear. If you look closely, it is oil pooled between pleats, and the flash from the camera reflecting.

The new ones are made by Wix, similar to Napa Silver.

But yea, I wouldn't use a Fram made one... lets hope Purolator doesn't ever get the contract for ANY private label brands.

Not a tear ... looks like oil laying at the bottom of the pleat and the camera flash reflecting off the oil.

I have a question. Looking at the second and third pic from the top, it appears that the top of the center tube is exposed. It also looks like the exposed area is aligned with at least one of the exceptionally wide pleat areas. Was the centertube end uncovered/exposed when the bypass/adbv fell off or was removed? If so while the pleat didn't tear, it's deformation of the fiber endcap could have resulted in the same effect at the center tube.

I guess the filter cutting noob is coming out in me, I'm not sure what you mean. When the filter was cut, I removed the gasket/cap, and the first thing there was the adbv. the adbv was just "popped" inside the center tube. So when I removed the adbv, what you see is the third picture. Hopefully that answers your question?

Part of it is my fault. This for GM so there's no bypass, just the leaf spring with centertube cover. Other end is adbv. In second and third pics I see what looks to be one side or half (lower right) of the top of the centertube exposed and the other half (upper left) covered by fiber endcap. If you don't see it that's ok, just wondering.

Looks like they were using a few less pleats in the off brand version than even the orange can. The PH3980 is one of the better Extra Guards in my experience. Not particularly impressive but it held up. You sure that's only 5k? The condition suggests more to me based on the other similar filters I've cut or seen posted here.

As I said above, it was a guess. It is not more than 9k. But his front main seal leaks like crazy, and he's always broke, so he never fixes it. He tends to add 10-40 as a top-off oil, and sometimes ignores it and lets it run low. But when he does top up, it usually leaks a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles. The owner prior to him was family, and thoroughly abused the vehicle.

Scary thing is-Puro HAS private label brands (ProLine, Quaker State, & Promotive for example)& because the seams are glued, they DON'T TEAR!! Go figure!
