Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 vs Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus

The DWS 06+ and 06 are literally the same tire except they discovered that swapping the position of 2 bands of the tread pattern with one another made some improvements. I can't seem to find where I read this, but I'm fairly confident on that.

Currently in the market for some ExtremeContact Sport 02's myself. I would have no hesitation buying them either. Have used P4S' as well. I've also been looking at Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2 since they're OEM on my car these days but I'm not really sure if Audi did that to save money or what.

I think there’s a little more to it. The pervious version had a more “rounded” sidewall which pooched out? The plus version sidewall is flatter. I suspect this may have been done to tighten up the feel a bit. The previous version didn’t communicate much steering feel in the vehicle I had them on (which was pretty dead feeling too itself).

@OVERKILL - hey how do you like them so far? These are always on the top of my list!

Ya there were probably some more subtle additions but I remember the press release it was basically they switched that small tread band from one side to the other, or flipped its orientation. Can't really remember, otherwise the tread pattern is at least the same.

I appreciate knowing this - may help me when I start looking for tires again, thank you!

Like them just fine so far, still have to tweak the air pressure down a bit, they are currently at 36, placard is 33, I thought they'd go down more overnight than they did.

I dream of finding a new tire that saves 3-4 pounds per corner. Saving 10 pounds per corner? Pretty much a miracle, a blessed miracle. No wonder it feels so much better driving/handling.

Dropping down in wheel size got me a good chunk of that in my truck, from oem 20” wheels to oem 18” - remarkable improvement.

I think people really underestimate the ability of a tire to transform a vehicles road behavior.

A lot of people view thenm as round and black.

I'll always pony up for a high quality tire that conforms to my criteria. Rarely does a Michelin let me down (Hydroedge i'm looking at you)... Ive run Contis on Mercedes and the old Jetta GLX as well as the old TDI and aside form living up to the reputation for sidewalls made of glass (thanks Ohio Interstate System) have found them to be wholly satisfactory.

I don't know that mine even offer 17" in this new generation but would consider the change if they did. I'd love to cut several pounds unsprung per corner.

You have a good memory!

......Like the DWS06, its “Plus” successor is built with SportPlus+ Technology, which provides drivers with precise handling, security on wet, slippery roads and excellent tread life, Glaeser said. These characteristics take the form of macro tread blocks, chamfered edges, X-shaped sipes, and traction grooves on the tire’s tread that allow for more tire-to-road contact and enhanced grip.

But the differences between the DWS06 and the DWS06 Plus can be seen in the nuances of its tread design and compound. Glaeser said the tire has bigger, stronger tread blocks and full-depth 3-D sipes for enhanced snow grip. The thin rib on the tire’s tread has also been flipped to provide better dry handling on the outside of the tire......

I found the DWS 06 excellent on lighter cars up to about 2,800 pounds. With heavier cars, sidewall stiffness was lacking. The DWS 06 Plus has stiffer sidewalls but I have them only on a very light vehicle that weighs about 2,700 lbs. On that they are excellent. I get about 25-30k miles on the drive wheels out of them, which for me is good.

These are also XL rated, which may help.

I had the DWS on my old B6 A4. Numerous sidewall punctures. Once was a smaller pothole and one, I'm not even sure cause I don't remember hitting anything; just turned on my street and boom, flat tire. I ended up with the 06s and I didn't have any problems but they didn't wow me. Could be that I was driving a car with 16's and they had more meat as opposed to my S4 which were slightly wider and less sidewall.

My friend had them on his WRX (or was it his B6 S4????) and he hated them. Said they were too soft. I think his were the OG not the 06 or later. I would give them a try again but I have my heart set on the AS4 when I need new tires for the Impreza. These OEM Yokos seems to suck and are getting loud at 5 years and 23k miles. I just can't justify replacing them due to such low miles for the sake of wanting new ones. I gotta get more life out of them or something has to happen where I need new ones.

I've had the DWS-06s on a Malibu 2.0T and they are great, had them on my 2015 SS sedan and wasn't thrilled as I found the sidewall a touch soft but the newest DWS-06 Plus are a jump up for sidewall stiffness on my CTS V-Sport...

YMMV

I've had both. The Michelins feel better from a performance standpoint. They respond and feel more like a summer tire with a properly stiff sidewall. The Continentals are a lot more comfortable, both in ride quality and noise level. Dry and wet grip is excellent in both though the Continentals are much better in snow.

Continentals get my vote. I'm taking comfort over feel if I'm buying uhp all seasons.
