Metal in oil at 25k - 2023 Tacoma

What I find in piston aircraft engines is a tiny amount of dust-like particles. A single sliver doesn't sound unusual in terms of amount, but a "sliver" is a different shape that could be an issue. I don't know.
Lycoming has a publication about how to interpret what you find inside the oil filter. It's educational but I don't know how applicable it is to cars & trucks:

Note that page 13 says, "10 or fewer short hair-like pieces of magnetic metal", which might match your description of a "sliver". This leads to "Corrective Action 1", which is to change the oil & filter, run it for several hours, then check it again.

BTW, why didn't the filter catch what you show in your drained oil? Seems it should have.
Interesting, thanks for the attachment. “Sliver” was probably a bad word to use. It was more of a larger, flat, oval-shaped flake. Probably half the size of a grain of rice.

The oil in the pan was poured directly from the oil filter housing, so I’m thinking the oil filter may have caught some of the flakes seen and they were knocked loose when I emptied it into the pan

perhaps a magnetic drain plug or a magnet somewhere on the lower cover, then see if its ferrous or not may help define where its coming from,,also try a different filter and oil.though it could be only some metal left in the oil pan.

This is the oil from pouring it out of
I wouldn't wait another OCI to take that to the dealer, but that's just me.
I could take it in for documentation but I would be surprised if they investigated further because the truck shows no symptoms of engine damage as of now

This is the oil from pouring it out of the filter? Just to clarify.
Yes, that’s correct. What’s pictured was poured out of the oil filter housing.

The oil drained straight from the engine looked mostly normal. It had a tiny bit of sparkle, but I think most used oil would show a slight amount of glitter if you took a flashlight to it.

I could try that. I have a fumoto valve on right now. Not sure if it’s true, but I read somewhere that the fumoto valve sits up slightly higher in the oil pan, allowing for some oil to pool on the bottom even after draining all of the oil. I’m wondering if some debris from break in was trapped down there for awhile and then eventually got picked up and circulated to the oil filter?

Is your VIN part of Toyota's impacted from leftover aluminum flashing being left in the block?

I know people on here have seen flakes in their oil but that hasn’t been my experience. That seems like a hecka lot for 25,000 miles, but maybe that’s just me.

And “normal” spectrographic analyses isn’t uncommon for failures that shed particles. The analysis cannot detect particles unless some pre-processing of the sample is performed, such as an acid digesting. The machine is protected from such particles.
Yep the typical uoa test doesn't pickup anything bigger than 6 to 8 microns.
Looks like forbidden glitter.
