When you mean the red light, is that the check engine or oil pressure alert? Then there's nothing to worry about. It's the red light that's bad.

Yes the red oil pressure light is the bad one. The engine is still lubricating fine when the low oil level message pops up but if one keeps driving it and burning more oil then it's the red light. I'd keep a quart and a little funnel in its own ziploc bag in the vehicle. When you mean the red light, is that the check engine or oil pressure alert?
Got it. Makes sense. I know the car doesn't burn oil or leak. In this case, they simply didn't top off the oil or let me know.Yes the red oil pressure light is the bad one. I agree. I called the mechanic shop, which is quite reputable and treated me well for over two years now, and let them know. They agreed it's concerning (and apologized) and will be investigating with the technician who performed the work. Not to sound negative, because everyone makes mistakes, but a mechanic underfilling an engine that much and sending it home is quite concerning. I mean, did he bother to check the dipstick?

You're right. I have a reminder on my phone to check the oil on all three cars once a month, so I was just going off that. I will start checking after every oil change too. It's probably good practice to verify the level when leaving service shops. You shouldn't have to, but...
I knew a guy in college that would do it in the parking lot before driving off. (they had a history of way overfilling his particular engine)
That's an interesting question. They don't oversell me on tons of stuff I don't need, but notify me when I truly do need something. The work they've done has never had issues (until this time). Easy to work with and transparent. They have never seemed dishonest.Going to the shop for 2 years...how'd they get it right before?
How much oil were you providing before? Was it different than this visit? That's an interesting question. I’ve always provided two 4 quart jugs. One of the jugs is typically used and partially full. This time the used jug had too little obviously. How much oil were you providing before? Was it different than this visit?
