Hello all,

I have a Mercedes with a gas 4.0L V8 that's only a few years old. I usually got dealer oil changes, but I’ve decided to start going indie or doing it myself from now on.

I checked the manual and it calls for MB 229.52 or 229.61 spec oil. I'm in Canada, and I can get either of these two oils for a good price right now:

  • Quaker State Euro LX Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic 0W-30
I can’t seem to find the website for this exact product (oddly), but the bottle shows MB-Approval 229.52. Along with VW 504.00/507.00, Porsche C30
    I can also get:
    • Quaker State Euro L 5W-30 (MB 229.51)
    • Quaker State Euro LX (non-"Ultimate Durability") with MB 229.52
That said, going off packaging alone, the Ultimate Durability looks like the better product — but I haven’t been able to find a spec sheet or SDS to confirm any real differences.

Then there’s another option:

  • Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 from Walmart Canada — this has MB 229.5 approval. Along with BMW LL-01, Porsche A40; VW 502.00, VW 505.00
I’m assuming 229.5 might cover or overlap with 229.51/229.52? (Not 100% sure on that though.)

Both the Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-30 and Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 are on sale for around $36–39, which is great since the full-price oils are more like $60+.

So, between these two — Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 (229.5) vs Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-30 (229.52)which would you rather run?

Thanks!

(P.S. I’ve attached photos of the products — I believe the Canadian stock looks different than the U.S. versions.)

Pennzoil Euro LX 0W-30 is the same as the QS Euro LX 0W-30. In Canada, the Pennzoil Euro LX 0W-30 is made in Germany.

Canadian Tire or Walmart no longer seem to carry the QS Euro LX.

The Pennzoil comes on sale at Canadian Tire every month pretty much.

Another oil that is the same oil is the MotoMaster OEPLUS European Premium 0W30. It's on sale right now for $36.99/5L.

And another option is the Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. It comes on sale every month at Canadian Tire as well;

Just buy the least expensive one you can find at Walmart that has the approval. A spec sheet isn't going to tell you which one is better.

And neither will the package.

Just to check my understanding, you have a gas engine and you're looking at .51 or .52 oils?
Aren't those for diesels?
At least when I was speccing oil for my fleet of Sprinters, these were diesel oils.

The .5 and .6 are for gas engines.

Wierdly so I thought the same thing but my manual specifically showed .52 or .61 for my vehicle / gas engine. Mine is a gas engine indeed.

Thanks! The Quaker is at Partsource

I would have got the ESP but it’s not on sale and seems like all of these should be similar as long as they meet MB spec

If I'm not mistaken:
229.5 - full SAPS oil, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs
229.51 - basically meant for diesel engines, low/mid SAPS, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs
229.52 - meant for gasoline engines, low/mid SAPS, normally xW-30 oils, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs
229.61 - meant for gasoline supercharged engines, low SAPS, 0W-20 oils, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs

I think 229.52 is a solid choice for that engine.
As @BornSlippy mentioned, MotoMaster 0w-30 oil is a great choice and is on sale, it's also a made in Germany by Shell oil just like Pennzoil LX.

I thought VW 504.00/507.00 was the toughest standard, is that true? cuz the .52 one has with VW 504.00/507.00

However the Pennzoil has MB 229.5 approval which is stronger then .52 along with BMW LL-01, Porsche A40; VW 502.00, VW 505.00

Just trying to figure which is the better oil based on specs

After giving it some thought, I think I am sold on going with the Mobil 1 Euro 0W-40, which I believe is more well known as
M1 FS 0W-40 around here. I see it is now on sale at CT for 37.99 CAD along with being a 229.5 or I could go with the Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 which I outlined above since it runs for $40.00 CAD at Walmart however they are running a cool rebate when I buy 2 of em in which I can get like $25-$30 as a gift card. Unless someone can convince me otherwise I believe I read that M1 was the better oil ?

However am I still safe to run a 229.5 even tho my engine asks for 229.52?

Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX 0W30
Mobil ESP Advanced 0W30

Both are 229.52 and on sale this week at CT. Pennzoil has the $20 rebate for the Euro oils.

229.5 - full SAPS oil, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs
It is Full-SAPS, but not aimed at fuel economy. All MB 229.5X approvals are HTHS 3.5cp or higher. So, if you see .5X, that is geared primarily for wear protection.
229.51 - basically meant for diesel engines, low/mid SAPS, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs
No. It is Low-SAPS oil, but it is both gas and diesel. In EU MB 229.31 and MB229.51 are used since 2009 in gasoline engines. The reason why they were not used earlier is that the EU had high sulfur gasoline, and sulfur is a negatively affecting additive in oil. Since 2004 in EU they use use low sulfur diesel, so those oils (MB229.31) were used primarily in diesels, and bit later MB229.51 (stricter standard over 229.31). Since 2017 the US is using ULSG.
229.52 - meant for gasoline engines, low/mid SAPS, normally xW-30 oils, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs

No. MB229.52 is improved MB229.51. Better cold performance requirements and LSPI test were added.

229.61 - meant for gasoline supercharged engines, low SAPS, 0W-20 oils, aiming at fuel economy and extended OCIs
No. It is Low-SAPS oil aimed at better fuel economy over MB229.51/52. HTHS is minimum 3cP, maximum 3.49cP. It comes in 0W30 grade. MB 229.71 is 0W20.

MotoMaster 0w-30 oil is a great choice and is on sale, it's also a made in Germany by Shell oil just like Pennzoil LX.

Yes, Motomaster Euro 0W30 is repackaged Shell Helix 0W30 ECT or what is known here as Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX.

To be clear, all these approvals are updated every few years. So for example, just because MB229.51 was introduced in 2009, it does not mean the current requirements are the same as in 2009. They were constantly updated.

As long as you don't have gasoline particulate filter (GPF).

Have not seen any issues running 229.5 oils in the .51 or .52 cars. Only concern is high saps if it has a gpf, time will tell with that.
