Hello all,
I have a Mercedes with a gas 4.0L V8 that's only a few years old. I usually got dealer oil changes, but I’ve decided to start going indie or doing it myself from now on.
I checked the manual and it calls for MB 229.52 or 229.61 spec oil. I'm in Canada, and I can get either of these two oils for a good price right now:
Then there’s another option:
Both the Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-30 and Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 are on sale for around $36–39, which is great since the full-price oils are more like $60+.
So, between these two — Pennzoil Euro 5W-40 (229.5) vs Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W-30 (229.52) — which would you rather run?
Thanks!
(P.S. I’ve attached photos of the products — I believe the Canadian stock looks different than the U.S. versions.)

- Quaker State Euro LX Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic 0W-30
I can’t seem to find the website for this exact product (oddly), but the bottle shows MB-Approval 229.52. Along with VW 504.00/507.00, Porsche C30
I can also get:
- Quaker State Euro L 5W-30 (MB 229.51)
- Quaker State Euro LX (non-"Ultimate Durability") with MB 229.52
Then there’s another option:
- Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 from Walmart Canada — this has MB 229.5 approval. Along with BMW LL-01, Porsche A40; VW 502.00, VW 505.00
I’m assuming 229.5 might cover or overlap with 229.51/229.52? (Not 100% sure on that though.)
