Mercedes 229.5 Choice

For MB 229.5 , I'm either going to go with Pennzoil Platinum 0w40 or Castrol 0w40 . Mobil 1 0w40 is in it now , I just haven't been a fan of Mobil since I tried Castrol in my VW . Not going to a boutique oil , any thoughts between the 2 .Its going in a E350 3.5 V6

I'm running PPE right now, if I didn't pick it up for $2/qt I would be using the Castrol since it's easier to get and cheaper.

You really can't go wrong with any 229.5 oil. They are among the best PCMO money can buy from a quality standpoint.

Well between Castrol and Pennzoil there is not much of a price difference. I'm looking for more of engine protection , cleaner . Im going to be doing 5I OCI

Realistically, I don't think you will notice a difference between these two. Toss a coin if you have to.

If anyone says they can discern that one MB 229.5 approved oil offers "better protection" or is "cleaner" than another, ask them to provide proof.

I had an '07 E-350. I noticed slightly less consumption rate with Castrol than Mobil 1. Both were 0w-40 flavor as well. Half a quart @ 6k miles with M1 and quarter of a quart with Castrol. This was over 3 years @ 20k miles a year, split 50/50 highway and suburban. I changed the oil out @ 10k. No real noticeable difference between the two for me.

I have tried all three in my 2 MBs--Mobil 1 0W-40 was first, but neither of my MBs cared for it and there was a fair amount of shearing that happened, especially in the twin turbo. WM cleared out Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-40 a short while back and I stocked up on it and use it in my C300. My AMG is pretty happy with Castrol Edge 0W-40 so I will keep using it. IMHO, both Pennzoil and Castrol performed "better" than Mobil 1 in either of my cars--YMMV.

I had a 2008 E350 4Matic and it preferred 5W40 I used Liquimoly, but any 229.5 approved oil will do.

I believe it's Mobil that provides the oil for Mercedes which is probably why I have a sticker under the hood that recommends Mobil. I just use whatever oil is on sale. I still have a bunch of Castrol 0w40 but have used Mobil 1 and Pennzoil. My driving is so varied that I don't even notice a difference. If you have to pick, I'd go with Castrol just because lots of other people seem to like it over Mobil and not much mention is made of Pennzoil. Castrol also has BMW LL-01 approval whereas Mobil 1 lost it recently. Regardless, all you need is 229.5 so either is still good. I'd probably get some more Mobil 1 0w40 once the $12 rebate kicks in in March. Castrol never seems to have rebates, I only have some left over from the Autozone clearance a few years back.

I believe it's pentosin now, found it once somewhere but can't recall where exactly

Mobil is the factory fill for most AMG models. I don't believe they've ever been the FF provider for the more pedestrian models, which I believe is Shell Helix or Fuchs depending on who you are listening to in this thread:

Since when? Both my 2018 cars had M1 as the factory fill and they have stickers stating Mobil 1 is the official oil of Mercedes.

I was in the dealer a few days ago and they were 2019's on the floor with the hoods up that all had Mobil 1 listed as the preferred oil.

Some dont even know mercedes oem are not M1 anymore.

I will gladly look at a picture of 2019 MB sticker which says Mobil 1, I was pretty sure they stopped putting it after 2016 or 17

Dealers MAY differ, but Mercedes itself does not. Every car that had its hood open had the M1 sticker on it that came that way from the factory.

You are suggesting that MB OEM oil is being used as the factory fill. Perhaps in Germany, but I would love to see proof of that being the case here in the US.

No argument from me, but what proof do you have that Mercedes OEM oil is what is being used as the factory fill in the US?

Well, I am certainly not going to make a special trip to a dealer to grab a picture to prove you wrong, but when I get a chance, I will take a picture of the M1 sticker under the hood of my 2018's--BOTH of them have it.

Of course all you really know for sure is that the sticker says Mobil 1. You don't know what oil is in the engine, all you have is inference.

That doesn't mention any oil company. Since I assume you are aware that Mercedes doesn't manufacture oil, that doesn't really help your position.

Again, that says nothing about who actually makes the oil, only that they have an AMG-branded oil now. It certainly doesn't in any way counter Mobil's claims that they are the FF provider for AMG vehicles.
