As many of you know, I have a slight enfatuation with .50 BMG rifles, wanting to eventually own an M82A1.

I recently found out that the world-record for in-combat sniping is held by a Canadian, using the .50 BMG round, fired from a McMillan TAC-50.

Price-wise, this gun is several thousand dollars cheaper than the M82A1. It is not semi-auto like the M82A1, but that really doesn't matter.

Has anybody fired one of these? What is the recoil like compared to the Barrett?

The sniper, Corporal Rob Furlong, is not only Canadian, he was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), which is based here in Edmonton.

Yeah, a reservist friend of mine was in Afghanistan with Furlong, but even though I know him fairly well he wouldn't tell me any stories. He has since gone back on another tour of duty (Do they call it that in Canada?), but remains kind of tight lipped about it. I guess, understandably, he doesn't want to share those kinds experiences with a civilian.

He's from Newfoundland!

Now is part of the Edmonton police department.

Yeah, a touch pricey.

It may be, but I figure a rifle/cartridge like this is only going to get fired by someone who shoots really well, and learned how to shoot with much less expensive equipment. I also figure any shooting session with the .50 BMG is only going last a handful of rounds. I really can't imagine a shooter this sophisticated blasting dozens rounds on target more than a KM away. So,in the time that I would shoot two boxes of 9mm (approximately $30-40) I bet the BMG shooter would only shoot 6-7 rounds. Sounds pretty economical to me, for that volume of fun.

Well, I'd sure as heck like to try it!

You can own one of those in Canada? I'm wanting one eventually to. I may have trouble finding a place I can shoot 500+ yds with it, but it would be fun. The retired FFL dealer in town has/d a .50BMG rifle. I'm not sure if it's semi-auto, or single shot. Since he had a bad stroke (reason for retiring from being an FFL) he doesn't shoot many of his guns anymore. My dad is very good friends with him, and have been wanting him to ask Larry if it's for sale.

Yessir. Touching the "prohibited" list of rifles (of which the Barrett M82A1 is listed under) by ANY political party would be suicide. Even though every major national party, save for one, has a policy on eliminating all civilian firearms ownership.

So since they won't dare touch the list, the "Mac-Tac-Fifty" is good to go like any other sporting bolt-action rifle. Yep, if you were dedicated, you could bring it hunting!

I also find it funny how we can buy an M203 grenade launcher fully operational, over the counter with no restrictions, yet in the US, they are classed as a destructive device and require registration like a full-auto.

Not to mention the gun is gorgeous. I read an aussie account of a TAC-50 review, and it was actually quite comical. The muzzle-brake actually took the legs out from under somebody who was standing too close
